Portal content brings access – on a single portal desktop – to document repositories, internal and external services, reports and analytics, and business transactions in enterprise applications

Content needs to be developed in a way that enables an organization to connect to their information repositories from the portal, retrieve data, and provide a usable interface for end users to interact with this data.

The table below describes the where and how one can obtain content for the portal; or, alternatively, develop such content.

Standard portal content

SAP ships initial content with the portal. This content consists mostly of tools and services for administering and monitoring the portal. The content is assigned to pre-configured administration roles. In addition, it enables delegated administration, or distributing portal administrative responsibility to distinct administrative roles, such as the default roles of super administrator, content administrator, user administrator, and system administrator.

The initial content also consists of iViews intended for portal end users, such as the Universal Worklist and Welcome iViews.

For more information, see Standard Portal Content.

Self-developed content

Customers can use various tools to develop their own content and deploy it in the portal.

The administration tools in the Portal Content Studio, such as its wizards, can be used to create or modify content without the need to write a single line of code.

Those users with programming knowledge can develop content using the Portal Development Kit (PDK).

For more information, see Portal Content Studio and Running an Enterprise Portal (in SAP NetWeaver Developer's Guide).

Business Packages for SAP Enterprise Portal

SAP delivers ready-to-use solutions in the form of business packages. Business packages are pre-configured collections of role-based portal content which customers can import into their portal.

The use of business packages minimizes time to deployment, streamlines common business processes, and provides immediate productivity.

For more information, Business Package Administration.

For information on importing and exporting content to and from the portal, see Transport of Content Objects and XML Content and Actions.

Portal Content Directory (PCD)

The Portal Content Directory (PCD) is the central persistence for all portal objects. For example, it stores the name and properties of each object, and the relationships between the objects.

The Portal Catalog represents a specific view on the data of the PCD. The Portal Catalog is part of the Portal Content Studio, the administration tool with which you can create and edit portal content. The Portal Catalog permits access to the content objects stored in the PCD using a tree structure.
