You can create value help entry lists to help you while designing your model - for example, to supply valid values to a formula - or to populate controls such as drop-down lists. You design these types of lists in conjunction with the Entry List function, described in Create an Entry List.

Procedure

  1. Choose   Tools   Entry List Manager  . The Entry List Manager dialog box is displayed.

  2. At the bottom left, click Add and choose Value Help List from the drop-down list. The Value Help wizard is displayed.

  3. On the Select a Data Source screen, use the Available Services section to browse to the data service that you require (refer to Find Data, which describes the similar Find Data task panel).

  4. Depending on the type of data service, select a characteristic (BI system), level (XMLA system), or table column (JDBC system):

Select the Data Source (Select the Data Source)

  5. Click Next.

  6. On the Review Value Help List screen, click Browse to retrieve available values. Up to the first 1000 records are returned. You can use the Look for drop-down list to search for values, if the values you require are not found in the first 1000 records. If you search, you can select an Operator and enter values in the Low and High fields to help restrict your search.

  7. From the Available Values list, chose the values that you want to appear in the entry list and click the right arrow to transfer them to the Selected Values list in the right pane. Click the left arrow to remove selected values from the list:

  8. When your list is complete, click Finish. The values are transferred to the Entry List Manager, as in the following example:

List (Finished List)

Result

The entry list that you created is now available as a global entry list, accessible from the Entry List tab in the Control Properties dialog box when defining various types of lists (see Create an Entry List). You can use the values in the Expression Editor, like you would data fields, by expanding the Entry Lists node in that dialog box:

You can also use a value help entry list to populate controls such as drop-down lists or list boxes, which might look something like this in runtime:
