Glossary
The following terms are used throughout this document:
Term |
Definition |
administrator |
A portal user administering and managing content in the design time environment. |
business user |
A portal end user using content in the runtime environment. |
consumer portal |
In a federated portal network, a portal that accesses and uses remote content provided by other producer portals in the network. Synonyms: content consumer, consumer |
content federation |
A type of federated portal network comprising two or more portal installations, whereby a single portal functions as the logon portal for all users and the remaining portals function as content producers for the log-on portal (the consumer portal). |
content usage mode |
A means employed by a NetWeaver consumer portal to use content exposed by another SAP NetWeaver or non-SAP producer portal. See also: remote role assignment, remote delta link, and WSRP application sharing |
data provider |
Any entity in the portal that serves information, such as system landscape, look and feel service, UME, and PCD. |
execution base |
The physical location where an application is executed and its HTML rendered. In all content usage modes, remote-based iViews running on a consumer portal are executed on the producer portal at runtime. |
federated portal network |
A distributed landscape comprising more than one SAP and optional non-SAP portal installations that share content with each other. This gives users at each location a single portal access point, enabling them to gain seamless access information, services and applications distributed on portals throughout the entire organizational network. See also: content federation and portal federation. |
local content |
Portal content which is not dependent on any source objects or applications on a remote portal. This type of content differentiates itself from remote-based local content whose source applications reside on a remote portal. |
NetWeaver-derived portlets |
Portlets on a non-SAP consumer portal that represent remote iViews running on a NetWeaver producer portal. |
portal federation |
A type of federated portal network comprising two or more portal installations, whereby each portal installation typically functions as an autonomous entity serving its own content and users, but also exposing and consuming content to and from other portals in the federation. Portals in the federation can also rely completely on remote content from other portals, thus avoiding the need to create and maintain their own local content. |
portal-pairing |
A relationship between two portals within a federated portal network. In a one-way relationship, one portal (the consumer portal) consumes content exposed by the other portal (the producer portal). In a two-way relationship, at least one portal in the relationship is both a producer and a consumer in relation to the other portal; thereby exposing its own content for consumption by the other portal, and also consuming content from the other portal. |
portlet |
An industry term referring to a display component or unit on a Web-based portal that allows users to access and interact with an information source or application at runtime. In SAP NetWeaver Portal, portlets are referred to as iViews. |
producer alias |
A unique identifier for each producer generated on a NetWeaver consumer. It also serves as an identifier that connects between content generated on a consumer (through remote role assignment, remote delta link, and WSRP application sharing) to the producer instance from which it originates. |
producer instance |
From the perspective of a consumer portal, refers to the producer entity for any portal-pairing. The term is sometimes used interchangeably with producer object. |
producer object |
A semantic object created on a (SAP NetWeaver) consumer portal when a connection to producer portal is created by a system administrator. The object enables the consumer portal to interact with the specified producer and use remote content it exposes. |
producer portal |
In a federated portal network, a portal that exposes its content for consumption by other consumer portals in the network. Synonyms: content producer, producer |
proxy-to-portlet iView |
An iView, on a NetWeaver consumer portal, which references a remote iView on another NetWeaver producer portal (and consumed through WSRP application sharing) or a portlet located on a non-SAP producer portal. |
registration instance |
The relationship between a consumer portal and producer portal, after the consumer portal has successfully registered with the producer portal. A two-way relationship requires two registration instances; each one initiated from a different portal (the consumer). |
registration scope |
The activities and content pertaining to a specific registration instance. Any consumer portal can register more than one instance with the same producer portal. Each instance is defined by a unique producer alias. Any task performed by either the consumer or the producer is confined to that instance. For example, if a given registration instance is deleted; content created in other parallel instances for the same portal-pairing is not affected. The term is sometimes used interchangeably with registration instance. |
remote delta link |
A content usage mode allowing a content administrator on a NetWeaver consumer portal to create delta links to remote content (iViews, pages, worksets, and roles) residing on a NetWeaver producer portal, and to configure and customize that content locally. A remote delta link also refers to the type of delta link relationship between two objects that reside on separate portals. |
remote role assignment |
A content usage mode allowing a user administrator on a NetWeaver consumer portal to assign users directly to portal roles residing on a remote NetWeaver producer portal. |
remote-based local content |
Content created on a NetWeaver consumer portal through the remote delta link and WSRP application sharing modes. This refers to remote delta link objects and proxy-to-portlet iViews, whose source applications exist on a remote producer portal. |
trust |
A secure state attained between portals. As a result, users from a consumer portal are recognized as authenticated users on a producer portal when a request for content is made by the consumer. Trust is achieved by exchanging portal server certificate file between servers. |
An XML language for describing Web services offered by a server. WSDL = Web Services Description Language. A consumer portal must obtain the WSDL information from a producer portal to initiate a connection and complete the registration. For more information about the WSDL specification, see http://www.w3.org/TR/wsdl. |
|
WSRP (Web Services for Remote Portlets) |
An industry standard supporting portal and portlet interoperability. Defined through the joint efforts of the Web Services for Interactive Applications (WSIA) and Web Services for Remote Portals (WSRP) OASIS Technical Committees. For more information, go to http://www.oasis-open.org/committees/wsrp/. |
WSRP application sharing |
A content usage mode allowing a content administrator on a NetWeaver consumer portal to integrate remote WSRP portlets, exposed by a non-SAP or NetWeaver producer portal, as standard iViews in the portal. |
WSRP consumer |
A consumer portal that uses remote portlets exposed by another WSRP-compliant producer portal. Typically, this interaction is between a NetWeaver consumer and non-SAP producer portal. |
WSRP producer |
A producer portal that exposes its content (such as portlets or iViews) for use by other WSRP-compliant consumer portals. Typically, this interaction is between a NetWeaver producer and non-SAP consumer portal. |
