Function documentation Referencing Data from Products Locate the document in its SAP Library structure

Use

Reference products can be used to reference a product's business and technical data when you create individual objects. This means that data can be maintained centrally for a particular product and this data referenced for as many individual objects as required.

Prerequisites

Activate the product reference functionality in Customizing by choosing Cross-Application Components ® SAP Products ® Basic Settings ® Allow Product References for Individual Objects.

Features

Certain data, such as serial number, date and place of purchase, is generally specific to each individual object and therefore defined for each object separately. Other data, for example, manufacturer, model, may be shared by a large number of objects and can therefore be reused.

This graphic is explained in the accompanying text

Using a reference product allows you to reference set type data from the product concerned. Product references are defined at category level, and not for each individual object. An individual object is assigned a reference product in object maintenance. An individual object can only be assigned one reference product.

It is always the current data of the reference product which is referenced, blank screens are shown if no data exists. The set type data itself is maintained for the reference product, and not the individual object. Referenced set type data can therefore not be changed when you create or change an individual object, any changes necessary must be made to the reference product.

Other data that can be either referenced from a product or merely displayed includes the following:

·        Texts

These can be referenced from the reference product.

For more information, see Defining Categories for Referencing Data.

·        Documents

The documents are not referenced, but are merely displayed for the individual object.

·        Organization-dependent data

This can be referenced from the reference product. The data references defined apply to all sales organizations.

An Item Category Group for Individual Objects field is available specifically for individual objects in the sales data of the referenced product.

For more information, see Defining Categories for Referencing Data.

·        Relationships

The relationships are not referenced, but are merely displayed for the individual object.
