Database Function 

A database function is a database object that contains a series of statements and, therefore, forms an independent part of a program. A database function returns a value as a result.

Database functions are generated and stored in the database. You can define as many database functions as required. To implement a database function, you must use a function call for an SQL statement (database function call).
