Background documentation Special Features of Data Archiving (Archiving Workbench) Locate the document in its SAP Library structure

This document describes all the special features of archiving objects created using the Archiving Workbench (CA-GTF-TS-GMA), as opposed to archiving objects developed manually in the conventional way. The special features refer to the way in which archiving objects are developed, as well as to the subsequent data archiving process.

These features are as follows:

¡        Additional, optional subprocesses for analyzing the data distribution (pre-step).

¡        The analysis subprocess.

Note

You can find detailed basic information on data archiving in the Structure linkIntroduction to Data Archiving (CA-ARC) section of the SAP Library. These features apply, whether the archiving objects are created manually or with the Workbench, unless stated otherwise for archiving objects created with the Archiving Workbench.

Standard Tool-Based Creation of Archiving Objects

The Archiving Workbench simplifies the development process for creating archiving objects and standardizes the results, in other words, the completed archiving objects. For more information on this, refer to the Archiving Workbench section of the SAP Library.

Special Tools

The data archiving concept using the Archiving Workbench is based on the incorporation of the following tools:

Archive Development Kit (ADK). The archiving solution generated by the Archiving Workbench is based on the Archive Development Kit (ADK), as are the conventional archiving objects. The ADK contains a collection of modules used to develop archiving solutions. It also provides the runtime environment for archiving. You can find more information on this tool in the Structure linkArchive Development Kit (ADK) section of the SAP Library.

Batch-oriented parallel processing of mass data. This tool enables large volumes of data to be processed. The data archiving process based on the Archiving Workbench uses this tool to run the analysis and write phases of the archiving process in parallel. You can find more information on the parallel processing tool in the Structure linkParallel Processing of Mass Data (CA-GTF-TS-PPM) section of the SAP Library.

Archiving monitor (Archiving Workbench). You can use the archiving monitor of the Archiving Workbench to obtain an overview of the current and completed archiving processes at any time. This must be used since the archiving monitor in the ADK is not able to monitor the parallel analysis and write jobs started automatically by the parallel processing tool. For more information on this tool, refer to the Archiving Monitor section of the SAP Library.

Adjustment of Individual Phases of the Archiving Process

Additional, optional subprocesses for analyzing data distribution (pre-step)

Since the parallel processing tool is used for the analysis and write subprocesses, there is an extra process called the pre-step which is used to form package profiles. This subprocess can help avoid unnecessary losses of performance in parallel processing. For more information on this, refer to the Pre-Step (Archiving Workbench) section of the SAP Library.

Analysis subprocess

The analysis subprocess corresponds to the preprocessing in the ADK environment. Unlike for preprocessing, you can make settings for the analysis process in the global control of archiving to specify that the analysis is to start the write phase automatically when it finishes.

Enhanced Customizing Settings

Using the above tools means you are required to make enhanced Customizing settings for data archiving with the Archiving Workbench. For more information on these enhanced Customizing settings, refer to the Data Archiving Customizing Settings (Archiving Workbench) section of the SAP Library.
