Operational State
A database instance can be in the following operational states:
Operational State |
Description |
ONLINE |
The database instance is ready. Database users can log on and execute SQL statements. Database administrators can also execute a variety of administration tasks, such as backups. |
STANDBY |
Only for standby instances in Hot Standby systems; a standby instance cannot accept any connections and is constantly in a restart state. |
ADMIN |
The database instance is only available for administration tasks. |
OFFLINE |
The database instance is not running. |

When it is transferred from one operational state to another, the database may be temporarily in an intermediate state.
To monitor or change the operational state of the database instance, use the Database Manager, or, in SAP systems, the Database Assistant of the CCMS.
