The more dimension values you combine to valid grid values in the grid, to get the different variants of a single AFS material, the more important it is that you can influence the way in which the system performs these grid values in the application.

By using the sort sequence within the grid maintenance, you can control the system such that it displays the grid values of a material in a sequence in the application, so that you can quickly view and process them.

It is very important for the structure of a grid value, which dimensions you enter as first, second or third during the grid creation. The horizontal sequence of the dimensions in the grid value is always Dim1-Dim2-Dim3. When maintaining the grid you must decide which dimension is the most important for the distinction of the different grid values and take this as Dim1. You can not regroup dimensions subsequently.

In the application you view or process grid values in two different views. With the sort sequence you can change the sorting and arrangement of the values any time, according to your needs.

• In the line entry view, the system vertically displays all grid values in a row from top to bottom. The values of the same dimension are always displayed one below the other. Therefore, you can compare the line entry view with a table consisting of three columns, where the dimension values are displayed from top to bottom. A table line results in the grid value (which consists of up to three dimension values).
• In the grid entry view, the system displays all grid values in the form of ready for input or filled fields of a grid (depending on the application area), that means exactly as you have defined them in the grid maintenance.

You determine the sorting of the grid values in these two views using two steps:

• In Customizing you define a sort sequence for dimension values per dimension.
• In the grid maintenance you decide whether the sort sequence should be active for the dimension values of the used dimensions. If you have selected the indicator, you can further split the sort sequence, by entering the priority for the dimensions of your grid. That means, which dimension should have the first, second and lowest priority.

In both cases, you can subsequently change, adjust or remove your entries any time. Whether you have already used the dimension values or the grid at the time of change is not important.
