Function documentationSlotting

During slotting, a storage concept is automatically determined for a product. The system determines the underlying storage parameters that are relevant for putaway on the basis of master data, that is, product data, requirement data, and packaging data. These parameters describe the storage section in which the product is to be stored, the properties that the storage bin is to have, and the putaway strategy that is to be used. Slotting takes into account master data that is not dependent on the execution process. If the putaway process for a product is dependent on execution parameters, this dependency is taken into account later on during storage bin determination for putaway. This does not, however, have an effect on the results of slotting.

Prerequisites

  • You work with storage bin types.

  • You have defined the attributes in the product master that you want to use to determine the storage parameters.

  • You have defined storage type sequences in Customizing under Start of the navigation path Extended Warehouse Management Next navigation step Goods Receipt Process Next navigation step Slotting Next navigation step Master Data End of the navigation path.

  • You have defined a number range interval and assigned it to your warehouse in Customizing under Start of the navigation path Extended Warehouse Management Next navigation step Goods Receipt Process Next navigation step Slotting Next navigation step General Settings End of the navigation path.

  • You have defined influencing parameters in Customizing under Start of the navigation path Extended Warehouse Management Next navigation step Goods Receipt Process Next navigation step Slotting Next navigation step Influencing Parameter End of the navigation path.

  • You have made the settings for the condition technique in Customizing under Start of the navigation path Extended Warehouse Management Next navigation step Goods Receipt Process Next navigation step Slotting Next navigation step Condition Technique End of the navigation path.

  • You have defined condition records. To do this, on the SAP Easy Access screen, choose Start of the navigation path Extended Warehouse Management Next navigation step Master Data Next navigation step Slotting Next navigation step Condition Maintenance for Slotting End of the navigation path.

Features

During slotting, the system determines the following storage parameters and stores them in the product master:

  1. Putaway control indicator (and, optionally, stock removal control indicator)

  2. Maximum quantity in storage type

  3. Storage section indicator

  4. Storage bin types

The system always performs step 1. Steps 2 to 4 are optional.

Steps 1, 3, and 4 are performed using the condition technique. Step 4 can also be performed using storage bin type determination rules.

Slotting is optional. We recommend that you perform it periodically in the background.

The results of slotting can be used in storage bin determination. Slotting also forms the basis of rearrangement.

Slotting Steps

You can select the following slotting steps:

Slotting Step

Use

Determine Weight Indicator

Slotting determines the correct indicator based on your settings in product master data and Customizing.

For more information, see Customizing under Start of the navigation path Extended Warehouse Management Next navigation step Goods Receipt Process Next navigation step Slotting Next navigation step Influencing Parameter Next navigation step Intervals Next navigation step Define Dimension Indicators End of the navigation path.

Determine Volume Indicator

Determine Height Indicator

Determine Width Indicator

Determine Length Indicator

Update Requirement Quantity

If you use service parts planning (SPP) together with EWM, EWM can take over requirement quantity, number or order items, or recommended storage quantity from SPP and update these values in the product master data.

Update Number of Order Items

Update Recommended Storage Quantity

Determine Requirement Quantity

Slotting determines the correct indicator based on your settings in the product master data and Customizing.

Determine Number of Order Items

Determine Recommended Storage Quantity

Determine Putaway Control Indicator

You can use this indicator to control that during putaway, certain products are put away in certain storage types in a preferential manner.

Slotting determines the correct indicator based on your settings in Customizing. When you activate the slotting results, the system assigns the indicator to the product master data.

For more information, see Customizing under Start of the navigation path Extended Warehouse Management Next navigation step Goods Receipt Process Next navigation step Slotting Next navigation step Master Data Next navigation step Define Putaway Control Indicator End of the navigation path.

Determine Stock Removal Control Indicator

You can use this indicator to direct that particular products are removed from stock as preferred from particular storage types or storage type groups during stock removal. You can also control the sorting of stocks during stock removal.

Slotting determines the correct indicator based on your settings in Customizing.

When you activate the slotting results, the system assigns the indicator to the product master data.

For more information, see Customizing under Start of the navigation path Extended Warehouse Management Next navigation step Goods Receipt Process Next navigation step Slotting Next navigation step Master Data Next navigation step Define Stock Removal Control Indicator End of the navigation path.

Specify Storage Section Indicator

This indicator makes the system determine that a product is to be put away into one particular storage section in preference to another. You can define more than one storage section in priority order in a table.

Slotting specifies the correct indicator based on your settings in Customizing.

For more information, see the following activities in Customizing under Start of the navigation path Extended Warehouse Management Next navigation step Goods Receipt Process Next navigation step Slotting Next navigation step Master Data End of the navigation path:

  • Define Storage Section

  • Create Storage Section Indicators

  • Maintain Storage Section Search Sequence

  • Storage Type Sequences

Specify Storage Bin Type

You can use storage bin types to subdivide storage bins into groups (for example, large bins, small bins, and so on).

Slotting specifies the correct storage bin type based on the product master data and your settings in Customizing.

For more information, see the following activities in Customizing under Start of the navigation path Extended Warehouse Management Next navigation step Goods Receipt Process Next navigation step Slotting Next navigation step Master Data End of the navigation path:

  • Define Storage Bin Types

  • Storage Type Sequences

Specify Maximum Storage Type Quantity

Slotting specifies the maximum storage type quantity based on the demand data in the product master and your settings in Customizing.

For more information, see Customizing under Start of the navigation path Extended Warehouse Management Next navigation step Goods Receipt Process Next navigation step Slotting Next navigation step General Settings Next navigation step Define Storage Type Parameters for Slotting End of the navigation path.

Specify Minimum Storage Type Quantity

The storage type minimum quantity is a parameter used for replenishment. It defines the threshold below which replenishment is triggered.

Slotting specifies the minimum storage type quantity based on your settings in Customizing.

When you activate the slotting results, the system assigns the value to the product master data.

For more information, see Customizing under Start of the navigation path Extended Warehouse Management Next navigation step Goods Receipt Process Next navigation step Slotting Next navigation step General Settings Next navigation step Define Storage Type Parameters for Slotting End of the navigation path.

Specify Replenishment Quantity

Slotting specifies the replenishment quantity based on packaging specification.

Specify Fixed Storage Bin

A material can have dynamic bins or several fixed bins or exactly one fixed bin. A storage type parameter allows setting the maximum number of fixed bins allowed on storage type level. If a material operates with fixed bins, the system determines the bins once and then assigns them to the material.

For more information, see Customizing under Start of the navigation path Extended Warehouse Management Next navigation step Goods Receipt Process Next navigation step Slotting Next navigation step General Settings Next navigation step Define Storage Type Parameters for Slotting End of the navigation path.
