Function documentationModeling of Supersession Chains

A supersession chain consists of one or more replacement steps. A replacement step contains one or more items, depending on the replacement strategy that you want to use.

To create a replacement step from one or more items, you must specify the same date in the Valid from field for all these items at the cross-location entry. The service determines which items form a replacement step via this date at the cross-location entries. However, the system does not consider the date values at the location-specific entries of the item to form replacement steps.

Note Note

  • Note that the same base unit of measure must be assigned to all products that are part of a supersession. The system does not convert one base unit of measure into another base unit of measure (for example, piece to pack).

    Recommendation Recommendation

We recommend that you define a consistency check for the base unit of measure in Customizing. The system then checks whether the base units of measure for all affected products are the same. If this is not the case, it generates an error message. To use this consistency check, make the following settings in Customizing for Advanced Planning and Optimization under Start of the navigation path Master Data Next navigation step Product and Location Interchangeability Next navigation step Consistency Checks End of the navigation path:

    1. Under Maintain Field Catalog, specify the entity Product and the field name MEINS (for base unit of measure) for the field catalog 001.

    2. Under Maintain Validation, make sure that the validation S_V1 is active.

    3. Under Maintain Consistency Profiles and Assign Validation, make sure that the profile that is currently valid is assigned to the validation S_V1.

    4. Under Assign Consistency Profiles and Field Catalog to Group Type, make sure that the combination of group type Supersession Chain, relevance Planning and ATP, and the current valid consistency profile is assigned to the field catalog 001.

    End of the recommendation.
  • Note that the entry location of the successor product must always be stocked. This means that the replenishment indicator SN or ST must be assigned to the entry location of the successor product. If this is not the case, the system cannot properly realign the demand histories of the affected products when maintaining the historical data.

End of the note.

Prerequisites

You have filled the Valid from field in the master data for product and location interchangeability at the cross-location item.

Example

You are planning a one-to-one substitution on March 1, 2006, where product B will replace product A. You are planning a one-to-many substitution (OR) on April 10, 2006, where either product C or product D will replace product B.

You define this supersession chain in the master data for product and location interchangeability as follows:

  • You define a one-to-one substitution of product A by product B with one item and the date March 1, 2006 in the Valid from field at the cross-location entry of this item.

  • You define a one-to-many substitution (OR) with two items:

    • Specify that product C will replace product B for the first item.

    • Specify that product D will replace product C for the second item.

For both items, enter April 10, 2006 in the Valid from field at the cross-location entry.

The system uses your entries in the Valid from field to group the item of the one-to-one substitution in one replacement step, and the two items of the one-to-many substitution in a second replacement step.
