Opening Log Files in Microsoft Excel

You can use this procedure to:

1. Save both list and text formatted log and trace files to comma separated value (CSV) files.
2. Open the CSV files using Microsoft Excel without having problems with formatting.
   Note

   If you do not use this procedure when you open a CSV file using Microsoft Excel, it is possible that the file content is written into one column or in an unreadable format.

You can use this procedure when you want to view log and trace records in a human-readable format on a computer system on which a Log Viewer is not running. In addition, you can take advantage of the analysis tools provided by Microsoft Excel, such as the tools to chart the data, which can help you understand the data.

You have Microsoft Excel installed as part of Microsoft Office 2000 or later.

1. In the pane on the left, select the log file you want to save and choose  Save to file.
   Note

   You can also merge two or more log files and save them to a file. For more information, see Merging Logs .

2. Save the file in a CSV format to a directory of your choice.
3. Open the file using Microsoft Excel.
4. Select column A.
5. From the Data menu, choose Text to Columns.
6. In the Convert Text to Columns Wizard - Step 1 of 3 dialog box, select the Delimited indicator and choose Next.
7. In the Convert Text to Columns Wizard - Step 2 of 3 dialog box, select the following indicators: Tab, Comma, and Treat consecutive delimiters as one, from the Text qualifier dropdown box, select double quotation marks ("), and then choose Next.
8. In the Convert Text to Columns Wizard - Step 3 of 3 dialog box, select the General indicator and choose Finish.

The log and trace records are displayed in a human-readable format and you can take advantage of the analysis tools provided by Microsoft Excel.
