Function documentationCalculation of Total Weight and Volume of a Shipment

This function allows you to calculate the total gross weights, total net weights, and total volume of a shipment from the total weights and total volumes of the shipment's assigned advanced shipping notifications (ASNs). You can use the total weights and volumes as the basis for planning your truck loads. When you create or change a shipment, SAP Supply Network Collaboration (SAP SNC) allows you to calculate total weights and volumes automatically, but you can also override all automatic values with manual entries.

Prerequisites

You have activated the business function Supply Network Collaboration 1 (SCM_SNC_GEN_1).

The SHP_SET_TOTALS validation check is active. The shipment is in Draft status.

Features

Calculation Procedure of the System

The system calculates the total weight and volume of a shipment as follows:

  1. The system checks if units of measure are entered for the weights and volumes of the shipment. If units of measure are entered, the system uses these units. If no unit of measure is available, the system uses the unit of measure of the first shipment item.

  2. The system converts the total weights and the total volumes of the advanced shipping notifications (ASNs) that are assigned to the shipment into the units of measure of the shipment.

  3. The system sums up the total weights and the total volumes of the ASNs and writes the results into the totals fields of the shipment.

Automatic and Manual Calculation

Depending on whether and how you create or change a shipment, total weights and volumes are calculated as follows:

  • Case 1: Creating a new shipment on the Due List for Shipments screen

When you create a new shipment on the Due List for Shipments screen, the system automatically calculates the total weights and volumes. You can replace the automatic calculations with manual entries.

  • Case 2: Creating a new shipment on the Shipment Overview screen

When you create a new shipment on the Shipment Overview screen, the system calculates the total weights and volumes when you save the shipment, provided the fields for total weights and volumes are empty. If you have already manually entered values for weights and volumes, the system does not overwrite them, but keeps the manual values.

  • Case 3: Changing a shipment

When you change a shipment on the Shipment Overview screen, you must choose the Calculate Totals pushbutton to trigger the recalculation of total weights and volumes. Alternatively, you can enter a value manually. If you manually enter values for weights and volumes, the system does not overwrite them, but keeps the manual values when you save.
