As terms must be entered in STERM with a part of speech, it is very important to distinguish between the various types of multiword terms: noun, verb, adjective or adverb. The root word of a multiword term is the main indicator of the part of speech. The root word of the phrase is the element that can be declined or conjugated.
The root word is bold in the following examples.

See
Part of Speech for guidelines for distinguishing between nouns, verbs, adjectives and adverbs.Clause
The category Clause includes word sequences which contain at least two root elements of a sentence: a subject (= noun or nominal phrase) and a predicate (= verb or verbal phrase):
Example
trailer swings out, receipt is being printed
If the conjugated verb in the phrase is the auxiliary verb to be, it can be omitted:
Example
machine not ready for use, elevator under repair
If you classify a term as a Clause, you should assign it to the part of speech Noun.
Part of Speech
Terms can have the following parts of speech:
If you cannot identify the word type of a term, use the following guidelines:
Noun |
Nouns are words or expressions that refer to persons, places, things, circumstances or attributes. Nouns also have the following characteristics:
|
Verb |
Verbs identify actions. Verbs can be conjugated. |
Adjective |
Adjectives define properties of nouns. Adjectives can be declined like nouns. |
Adverb |
Adverbs describe situations. They are neither declined nor conjugated. Adverbs answer the questions How, When, or Where? Enter prepositional phrases in the terminology database as adverbs. For example:

Gender
You may also need to maintain the gender of a noun, depending on the language for which you are maintaining the term.
English nouns require no attribute for gender, so the function for setting this attribute does not appear. German nouns require attributes for gender, so attributes for gender appear when you select Noun as the part of speech for a term.
