Use

The EAN128 label is used for identifying a handling unit. It describes the type and contents of a handling unit, and provides this information both in text form and as a bar code. This information:

Note

In the supply chain, the EAN128 label is of central importance for logistics. The vendor sends a shipping notification via EDI to the customer. In particular, information on the handling units is transmitted here. If the handling units are marked with an EAN128 label, the customer can check the respective materials in goods receipt and perform this check more efficiently by using scanners. The EAN128 label thus serves as identification until the handling unit is repacked in the warehouse or used in production. The identification may even retain its validity until the handling unit leaves the warehouse again as an entire unit.

In contrast to the Structure link material label in the car industry, the contents and appearance of the EAN128 label is not standardized. The international standardization organizations have only defined, as yet, a framework proposal that gives each label manufacturer a relative degree of choice in label definition. The only convention that all organizations adhere to is the Serial Shipping Container Code (SSCC) that is used for unique identification of a handling unit.

In most countries, there is a separate subsidiary organization of EAN International that is responsible for defining the standard. In the US, this organization is called the Uniform Code Council (UCC), and in Germany it is the Central Office for Co-organization (CCG).

Prerequisites

First, make the following settings for label printing:

The output procedure HU standard contains the output type E128.

For automatic determination, maintain the condition records for output control.

Afterwards, label printing can take place using the Output from Handling Units transaction (VL74), which you can use to select all the handling units for deliveries or shipments. If you want to reprint a single label, you can also use this transaction to select individual handling units.

Features

The EAN128 label is printed using output control. The condition technique that output control is based on allows for considerable flexibility in determining:

The EAN128 label is depicted in the system by output type E128 within the Handling Units application (V6). In the standard system, the output type is linked with access sequence 0002, which in turn links to a condition table with the key for ship-to party and packaging material.

Due to the lack of a standardized form, SAP supplies the following sample form that only contains the SSCC.

Note

This sample form only functions on bar-code laser printers that are equipped with a barcode Subscriber Identity Module (SIM).

If you want to adapt or change the sample form, or use it as a basis for other labels, you can do so in the respective project as described under the Adapting Label Layout section.

The layout module can be assigned to the output type and the transmission medium, or assigned directly in the condition record, but the assignment in the condition record has a higher priority.

Printer determination using the shipping point

You can also define a printer within the condition record. Since the printer, and thus also the location, is generally defined and determined using organizational units, the printer can also be determined directly through the shipping point. In this case, there is one print parameter for each output type. In the standard system, print parameter 5 is assigned to output type E128.

If the type and size of the label are uniform (for example, DIN A5, adhesive label) and only the layout varies, maintain one label printer for each shipping point under Sales and Distribution ® Master data ® Others ® Print parameters for output type E128.

If the layout varies also, and therefore different printers are required, you need to perform the following:

  1. Define an extended condition table
  2. (for example, shipping point, ship-to party, and packaging material)

  3. Assign the extended condition table to the output type E128 using a new access sequence.
  4. Maintain the printer within the new condition records.
