In SAP EH&S you can use the following techniques that are used in the SAP standard system for editing and outputting language-dependent data from different code pages in an SAP System without Unicode character sets:

These code pages contain characters from several SAP(ISO) code pages. Blended code pages can contain complete character sets from individual code pages or subsets of them.

All SAP(ISO) code pages required are installed on the application server. The application servers switch to the corresponding code page depending on the logon language.

Caution

In SAP EH&S you cannot combine MDMP with a blended code page.

The following describes what you must take into account when choosing one of these techniques.

Note

The best solution for your enterprise cannot be described here and must be clarified by SAP consultants, for example, before implementing SAP EH&S.

Languages Required

The languages you require determine which code page(s) you have to install, because only certain languages can be displayed with each code page. If you use blended code pages, the number of languages you can display is increased and you can use combinations of languages that are different from those that use SAP(ISO) code pages in the standard system. If there is no blended code page that contains all languages that you require in your system group, you must install MDMP.

Special Characters Required

Special characters that are not frequently used from each language are not present in blended code pages. Before deciding on a certain blended code page you must therefore check whether all special characters are present that you need in the individual languages (for legally prescribed texts, for example).

Recommendation

We recommend that you install MDMP if you are not sure whether you can cover all the special characters you require using one blended code page. We do not guarantee that language-dependent texts (such as legally prescribed EH&S texts) will be output correctly in all cases using blended code pages.

Communication with Other SAP Systems

All SAP Systems that exchange data using ALE must have at least one common code page that is defined as the sending and recipient code page.

Language-Independent Data

Generally, language-independent data may only contain characters that appear in all code pages used. If you have installed the same blended code page in all SAP Systems used, then language-independent characters can be made up of all characters from this code page.

If you use MDMP, language-independent data may only be made up of those characters that are present on all SAP(ISO) code pages used in MDMP.

Recommendation

We recommend that you generally only use characters from the syntactical character set for language-independent data. This is the only way to ensure that data does not become inconsistent when enhancing the system in the future (when implementing other code pages or MDMP instead of blended code pages, for example).

Summary of Advantages and Disadvantages of Each Solution

MDMP

Blended Code Page

All combinations of languages are possible.

The combinations of languages that are possible are determined by the code page.

All special characters in all languages can be used.

Special characters in some languages that are used less frequently are not present.

Language-independent data may only contain characters that appear in all code pages used.

Language-independent data can contain all characters from the blended code page if it is installed on all SAP Systems.
