You can calculate the costs for the variant in a number of different ways:

You can use these methods to calculate the standard price of a variant and to valuate the inventory (see also: Valuated Sales Order Stock: Valuation).

If a goods receipt has been entered, the standard price entered by the system into the material master record of the variant at the point of the goods receipt is not changed automatically if you cost the same variant again.

Standard Cost Estimates for Variants

For frequently used variants, you can create a material master record that points to the configurable material. You can create a standard cost estimate for these products. The system creates the quantity structure from the dependencies between the components, and determines the costs required to manufacture the configured material.

Note

The standard cost estimate for the configured material is based on the standard dependencies. In the sales order, you can define a customer-specific variant that does not have to be the same as the costed variant.

Sales Order Cost Estimates for Configured Materials

With a sales order cost estimate you do not have to create a material master record for the variant. You define the configuration of the product in the sales order by choosing Item ® Structure ® Configuration and selecting the characteristic values. This structure then serves as a basis for the sales order cost estimate. You can also use an Structure link order BOM cost estimate.

Prerequisites for Costing Configured Materials

Sales order costing is frequently used to calculate planned costs for products that are configured in the sales order. Check the following:
