Estimating File Size and Related Parameters

Prerequisites

If there is no history of data extraction on your system, provide the system with a base case for its estimates by running a subset of an extraction before using the estimate utility.

Procedure

From the main DART menu, choose Configuration ® File size worksheet.

Enter your estimates for the number of records that exist for those segments that make up the bulk of the extract (usually the transaction data segments). Segments that hold relatively few records can be ignored.

Choose Refresh data, or choose Enter.

Result

The system calculates and displays an estimate for:

The extract file size in megabytes, if compressed
The extract file size in megabytes, if uncompressed

Using the above two figures you can see the effect of compression on the size of the extract file. You can then decide whether you wish to use compression with data extracts.

The time it takes to run the data extract in hours and minutes.

This estimate is for creating a compressed file.

The required disk space for temporary files created by the extract utility while sorting

The system also displays the name of the current application server, and the directory defined as the sort directory. You or the system administrator can define the sort directory through the system profile parameter DIR_SORTTMP.

Using the estimate for the size of the sort files, make sure that this temporary sort directory can accommodate the necessary sort files.

The sort space is only used if sorting takes place in memory, which only happens if the index size does not exceed the maximum index memory allocation.

The current free space available in the sort directory - that is where the R/3 system places temporary files - is also displayed.
