Synchronization of Serial Number and Equipment Number
Use
When creating master records for serial numbers, you can use the material master record to control that the serial number and equipment number are kept synchronous.
Prerequisites
In the material master record, for example, in the view General Plant Data/Storage 2 you have set the indicator Serialization Level to
1.If a material already has equipment numbers for a material, which are not the same as the serial numbers, you cannot set the indicator.

As the equipment number is by definition unique at client level, by synchronizing the serial number and equipment number, you can make serial numbers unique for all materials. The prerequisite for this is, that the indicator Serialization Level is set to
Features
If the indicator is
1 and serial numbers are assigned automatically, the equipment number is always set the same as the serial number when master records are created. This is independent of whether you create the master records using the master record maintenance or from a goods movement. If the user him/herself assigns serial numbers, then these must originate from the external number range that is valid for the equipment category.

The equipment numbers are no longer guaranteed to be uninterrupted as the following can happen:
During the automatic number assignment, the system takes the equipment number from the internal number range. It immediately updates the number range status, so that the same number is not proposed to any other user.
If the user terminates the creation unsaved, the number is not in the database as an equipment number, but the system does not reset the number range. This means that gaps can occur in the assigned equipment numbers.
If serial numbers and equipment numbers are kept synchronous, then subsequent changes to serial numbers are made using the function Edit
® Special Function. Serial Number ® Serial Number Change is consequently no longer possible, as the equipment numbers are already in the database as keys.If a conversion from material to material is performed and the serialization level is only at 1, for receiving materials, the system checks whether the equipment number and serial number are the same. If not, the conversion is terminated with an error message.
In this context, you can use the following Business Add-Ins (BadI):
You can use this BadI to create your own proposal data for a material. For example, you can implement it such that material data from certain internal tables is proposed.
You can use this BadI to initiate checks, which should be performed when the serialization level in the material master record is changed.
