The system automatically recognizes during upgrade if modification adjustment is necessary. You are then prompted to perform the modification adjustment.

You can run a preliminary analysis of necessary adjustments that shows you if and in which phase adjustments will be necessary before an upgrade is run. As of Release 3.0, those objects needing adjustment can already be displayed in transaction SPDD after you run the analysis. If you have a release older than 3.0, the UMODPROT.<SID> file located in the upgrade directory ‘log’ contains a list of the objects you need to adjust.

An adjustment is required for all objects that were both modified by you and delivered by SAP. If you have not made any or only very few ABAP Dictionary changes, you are generally not prompted to perform an ABAP Dictionary adjustment.

You must perform one of the following actions for all objects presented for adjustment:

• Retain modification:
  Confirm that you want to adopt the modification or maintain the changes with the appropriate maintenance transaction. Click the yellow traffic light in transaction SPDD to execute the data transfer reports.

• Cancel modification:
  Choose Reset to original.

If you do not carry out any of these actions, the new SAP standard becomes active in your SAP System and your modifications are therefore overwritten. In a later upgrade, you will be prompted once again to adjust these modifications. It is therefore important that you perform one of the two actions to minimize the work involved in future upgrades.

For data elements, the adjustment and reset to original activities can be supported by the Modification Assistant. All other object types (tables, domains, and so on) are adjusted using the corresponding maintenance transaction or using version management.

Dictionary objects are simultaneously displayed in transaction SPAU. However, no function is provided in transaction SPAU for processing these objects during this phase of the upgrade or during the import of Support Packages. If you nevertheless want to view the objects to be adjusted in transaction SPAU, you may see a green or yellow traffic light symbol before data elements. You could also see green check mark even if the data element has not yet been adjusted.

The adjusted objects are still displayed in the Modification Browser (SE95) and can also be seen in transaction SPDD. After Dictionary objects are reset to the standard in SPDD, they are still displayed in the tree structure in SPDD. They are, however, deleted from the display of the Modification Browser (SE95) and the modification adjustment (SPAU).
