Material valuation
If you have selected the plant as your valuation level (material valuation area), material stocks are valued – and material prices specified – individually for each plant. Account determination can also be plant-specific.

Inventory management
Material stocks are managed within each plant.

Materials planning
Each plant has its own planning data. You can carry out valuations cross-plant for materials planning.

Production

Costing
When costing, you must always set valuation prices within a plant.

Plant maintenance
Plants that plan maintenance tasks are characterized as maintenance planning plants. These plants can plan maintenance for other plants (known as maintenance plants).

The retail site as a plant

The business retail site object is a type of plant from which goods are distributed or sold.

The main types of retail sites are distribution centers (used for interim storage and distribution) and stores (used for selling goods).

Material master data

Material master data is maintained separately for each plant. In particular there are special views of the material master record that are maintained plant by plant using the following components:

Materials Management (Inventory Management, plant maintenance, valuation, procurement)
Production planning and control
Sales and Distribution (availability checks, transportation, delivery)

Controlling (costing within the plant)

In legal and accounting terms, accountability for stocks in each plant lies with the appropriate company code except for special stocks – for example, consignment stocks.

Planning is carried out in the standard system at plant level (using MRP).
