Characteristics: Value Hierarchy
Description
As of Release 3.0, you can set up a value hierarchy for characteristic
values. As a result, you can structure the characteristic values and the
search for a certain characteristic value is made easier. For example,
different countries were entered as values for the characteristic 'Country of
origin' of a certain product. You can structure these countries by organizing
the countries according to geographical regions or continents. For example,
you can group Asian countries together in the value group 'Asia'. If you want
to choose a certain country in Asia as a value, you can search specifically
using the value group 'Asia'.
- You create a value hierarchy via the function Edit -> Value
hierarchy on the allowed values screen of the
characteristic.
- You can enter subordinate values for a value via the function
Edit -> Value hierarchy -> Subordinate values.
- You can also group values together to a value group, as follows:
a) Select the values you want to group
together to a value group.
b) Choose the function Edit
-> Value hierarchy -> Summarize values.
c) Enter a name for the superior
value.
- You can set up as many hierarchy levels as required for values.
If you want to group subordinate values together further, select the values
and choose the function Summarize values . On each
hierarchy level, you can delete, include, move or copy characteristic
values.
- Within one value hierarchy, each value can occur only once.
- A value hierarchy can only be set up for characteristics with format
CHAR.
- For values with a value hierarchy, the indicator S is
selected for subordinate values.
- Only the values on the lowest level of a value hierarchy can be used in
object dependencies. A statement like country of origin = 'Asia' is, for
example, not possible. I would have to be something like country of origin =
'Thailand'. You cannot create subordinate values for a value once it has been
used in object dependencies.
In Releases 3.0A and 3.0B, you cannot yet choose the nodes of a value
hierarchy.
As of Release 3.0B, value hierarchies are available for operative use.
