New Packing Functions in the Warehouse Managment System (WMS)

Use

As of this release, you can generate pick handling units (HUs), in which materials can be packed during picking. The pick HU is assigned to a transfer order in the WMS. Pick HUs are then added to deliveries. Normally, further packing in the delivery is not recommended.

When you implement Handling Unit Management (HUM), picking in HU-managed storage locations will be done mostly with handling units (HUs). You can process entire handling units or repack materials into a pick HU. If you also want to use pick HUs for picking in non-HU storage locations, you can make this setting in the Implementation Guide (IMG), as described below.

In Release 4.0, you could use a customer exit to determine a packaging proposal in the transfer order and then confirm the handling units that were created to the delivery (see also Free Packaging in WM ). If you still want to use this function, you must make adjustments in the Implementation Guide (IMG), as described below.

For the pick HU creation process, you can make a setting in the IMG as to which packaging materials the system should use as a default for picking. You can set the following packaging proposals for any combination of warehouse number, source storage type, destination storage type and movement type:

Example

You want to define that euro pallets are always used for picking in a particular storage type (fixed-bin warehouse, for example). You would set automatic creation of pick HUs and use of euro pallets as the packaging material for this storage type in Customizing. In a different storage type, packaging changes often. In this case, you would create pick HUs manually.

Transfer order (TO) item split for pick HUs

If the pick HU is too small for the entire item quantity when the TO items are picked, you can split the TO item and continue packing the picked item quantity into a new pick HU.

Effects on Customizing

If you still want to determine packaging proposals in transfer orders by using a customer exit, you must make the following settings in the Implementation Guide (IMG) under Handling Unit Management:

If you also want to use the Pick & Pack function for a non-HU storage location, you must make the following settings in the IMG under Logistics Execution:

If you work with Handling Unit Managment, you need not set the Pick/Pack indicator.

If you want to create pick HUs automatically when you create TOs, you must make the following settings in the IMG under Logistics - General:
