Handling Units in Inventory Management

Use

As of Release 4.6C, the functions of Handling Unit Management are integrated in Inventory Management.

Ahandling unit is a physical unit consisting of packaging material (load carriers / packaging) and the goods they contain. A handling unit is always a combination of materials and packaging material. All information contained in the material items (for example, about batches or material numbers) is constantly available via the handling unit.

Handling units can be nested and you can also form a new handling unit from several existing handling units as often as you like. The items in a handling unit can consist of material items or other handling units. The movement of a handling unit therefore replaces the movement of the individual materials and handling units it contains.

At storage location level, you differentiate between packed and unpacked stocks. In storage locations that are subject to handling unit management, you can only make stock postings if you specify the handling unit.

Handling units can be used in all processes throughout the supply chain.

When using Inventory Management transactions in a storage location that is subject to handling unit management, the system does not create a material document, but creates a delivery in Shipping.

For material documents that are posted using transactions in Handling Unit Management (HUXX), there is a separate transaction type: WH - Goods Movements for Handling Unit.
