Creating a Sample Data Transfer File

Prerequisites

You know the relevant fields of the data transfer object, as well as the structure of the transfer file into which your legacy file was converted. In this step you can structure a sample data transfer file which you can use to test the data transfer.

Procedure

  1. SAP recommends Creating an Initial Data Transfer File that contains a sample data record. If a data transfer file already exists, you can either use it or simply overwrite it.
  2. You can use the Data Transfer Editor to modify the data transfer file.
If you modify the initial data transfer file, you only need to maintain the values that you explicitly want to enter. The object-specific NODATA character is the default entry in the fields.

For some data transfer objects you can create test data from data that already exists in the R/3 System. To do this, choose Test Data in the object-specific settings / options. If this option is available for an object, you can find further information on this in the application-specific documentation.

Result

You have structured a sample data transfer file which you can use to test the data transfer. You know the structure of the transfer file. You know how long and in which sequence the fields of the transfer object should be, and the sequence in which the structure tables for the transfer file occur.
