Bills of Material: Maintain Discontinuation
Data
Description
Within MRP, the discontinuation functionality (material master record)
means that a dependent requirement for a material item that is no longer
covered by stock is transferred to a follow-up item.
- You can define a follow-up material in both the material master record and
the bill of material. The follow-up item defined in the bill of material
overrides any follow-up material defined in the material master record.
- The discontinued material and the follow-up material must be subject to
MRP.
- The discontinued material and the follow-up material must have the same
base unit of measure.
In the bill of material, the discontinuation data is maintained on the
"General Data" item detail screen. To maintain this data, choose the
Discontin. data pushbutton or choose
Discontinuation data from the Extras
menu.
You see a dialog box in which you can display or maintain the following data
for the item:
- Discontin. ind.
The system determines this from the material master record. This indicator
identifies the material as a material to be discontinued.
- Discontin. group
The freely definable character string you enter in this field is used to link
together all the BOM items to be discontinued at one time.
- You can only enter a discontinuation group for an item if the item has the
discontinuation indicator selected. This item is to be discontinued and
replaced by another item (follow-up item). You enter the same key for the
follow-up item, but you enter the key as a follow-up group (see example).
You can use the discontinuation group to
implement parallel discontinuation: when one item is discontinued (main part
to be discontinued) another item (subordinate part to be discontinued) is
discontinued at the same time. For example, if you discontinue a specific nut,
you need to discontinue the bolt that goes with it at the same time.
- Settings in the material master (MRP):
You control discontinuation using the discontinuation indicator. The material
that is the main item to be discontinued has the value 1, and the material
that is the subordinate item to be discontinued has the value 3.
- Settings in the BOM:
The main item to be discontinued and the subordinate item to be discontinued
in parallel have the same discontinuation group.
- Follow-up item indicator
The system enters this indicator for a follow-up item. If a dependent
requirement for an item to be discontinued is not covered by stock, the system
transfers the dependent requirement to the follow-up item. The value you enter
for the follow-up group of the follow-up item is the same as the value you
enter for the discontinuation group of the items being replaced by this
follow-up group.
- Follow-up group
The freely definable character string you enter in this field is used to link
a BOM item to all the follow-up items that belong together, and to the
discontinued items that are to be replaced by this item (and any other
follow-up items that go with it).
A follow-up item replaces any item to be discontinued that has a
Discontinuation group the same as its Follow-up
group (see example).
You can only enter a follow-up group when you first create an item. Once you
have saved an item, you cannot create or change the follow-up group.
The discontinuation functionality supports both simple discontinuation and
parallel discontinuation. The information below tells you which settings you
need to make in the BOM to define simple discontinuation and parallel
discontinuation.
1. Simple
discontinuation
Simple discontinuation means that the item to be discontinued is replaced
by one follow-up item. The item to be discontinued must have the
discontinuation indicator 1 (material to be discontinued) defined in the
material master.
Example:
Item 0010 (material M-1) is to be discontinued and replaced by items 0010
(material M-2) and 0011 (material M-3).

1. Parallel
discontinuation
In a parallel discontinuation, items 0010 (material M-1) and 0010 (material
M-2) are to be discontinued and replaced by item 0011 (material M-3).
Material M-1 is the main part to be discontinued (discontinuation indicator
1). Material M-2 is the subordinate part to be discontinued (discontinuation
indicator 3). Material M-3 is the follow-up item.
