WM: Production Planning Interface to Warehouse Management

Description

Beginning with Release 3.0, it is possible for production planning (PP-SFC) to supply materials directly to production storage bins with the assistance of the Management (WM) system.

With this new MM-functionality, you can supply materials to various working areas facing production supply points for workstations that are grouped together in production supply areas.

The basic concept is for workers in production to be able to order the materials required. In the WM system, requirements are created that are then processed in the normal manner.

For each material and WIP location in a plant, it must be clearly established as to which storage bins the necessary materials will be supplied and what type of material staging will be implemented. This is known as a control cycle.

For Release 3.0, the following types of material staging are supported:

When a material is requested a transfer requirement is created in the Warehouse Management system. It is then processed by the system in the normal manner to create the transfer orders that carry out the physical movement of the materials.

The subsequent goods issue posting removes the required materials directly from the production storage bin and requires no additional activities in the Warehouse Management system. This takes place regardless of whether it occurs with return notification or as a specific goods issue posting with reference to a reservation.

Software/hardware requirements

For the PP interface to the WM system, the following components must be in operation:

Change system parameters in customizing

For the interface to PP to work properly, you must set up your system as follows:

1. Define the WM movement type for material staging. WM movement type "319" has been defined in the standard SAP system for this purpose.
Define movement type
2. Define at least one storage type for production supply. Storage type "100" has been defined in the standard system for this purpose.
Define storage type
3. Create the WIP locations.
Create WIP location
4. You must define and manage physical production storage bins using the WM system. Create the necessary production storage bins by selecting Master data -> Storage bin -> Create from the WM menu bar.
5. Define the control cycle records within a plant to establish how and to where a material is to be supplied within a WIP location. You create control cycles by selecting Master data -> Control cycle record -> Create from the WM menu bar.
6. If you want the material staging for production orders to take place automatically, you must set the "WM-request" flag at the production control level.
Set WM request flag
Note: If you select this task to mark the "WM request" field, you must first go to the detail screen for existing entries. If no entry has been made, the system will go immediately to the detail screen.
7. Mark the switch "PP-Interface" in the warehouse number record.
Set PP-Interface switch

Ensure that the materials used in connection with this interface are assigned to an appropriate production storage location and contain a production scheduler.

Changes in procedure

You can initiate the material staging function specifically for materials that are to be picked for production order processing. This applies to both manual and automatic processing.

Separate transactions still exist, however, for the different types of material staging that support requisitioning based on material demand.

To create transfer requirements for material staging, select TransRqmnt -> Create -> Production supply -> For production order / For crate part / For release order part from the WM menu bar. How you process subsequent screens is generally self- explanatory.

After transfer requirements for production supply have been created, you process them in the same manner as all other transfer requirements with no additional activity required in the WM system.

Further notes

In the WM movement type, you can mark a switch Automatic TO which causes the system to automatically create transfer orders. See the online documentation for further information on this topic.
