New Features of Employee Self-Service (ESS)

Use

1. ESS Menu
In Release 4.6C, the ESS menu (service PZM1 in Release 4.5B and PZM2 in Release 4.6B) has been replaced by mySAP.com Workplace service SAPWP). The old menu cannot be used any longer. You must convert to mySAP.com Workplace .
mySAP.com Workplace provides SAP users with role-based access to ESS services and any other SAP applications they require. mySAP.com Workplace is delivered separately. It runs on a separate R/3 System (basis system).
In Release 4.6C, Customizing tables (T77WWW*) are no longer used to set up the menu. For more information, see Changes to Structure of IMG for Employee Self-Service.
The ESS menu is now set up and changed using the role maintenance transaction (PFCG). Composite role SAP_WP_EMPLOYEE represents ESS functionality.
2. New Visual Design
In accordance with the SAP strategy of providing all Web-based applications with a uniform, user-friendly design, all of the services included in ESS have a new visual design in Release 4.6C.
Customers who use the ESS function library (essfunctions.html) for their own services should consider converting to the new SAP function library (TemplateLibraryDHTML.html). This is not mandatory, but it is advisable.
Some of the R/3 transactions on which ESS services are based have been changed for Release 4.6C. For this reason, previous HTML templates cannot be used any longer. If you want to use the new design, all existing HTML templates, service files, and graphics must be removed from the ITS Server, and then reinstalled. It is strongly recommended that you publish all of the above objects by using the SAP@Web Studio, rather than installing them by using 4.6C packages on the ITS installation CD.
Publishing objects by using the SAP@Web Studio ensures that the HTML templates match the underlying R/3 transactions and include the most recent LCP and Hot Package corrections.
3. The Employee Self-Service Role (SAP_WP_EMPLOYEE)
In Release 4.6C, the functions included in the SAP_ESSUSER activity group are now included in the SAP_WP_EMPLOYEE composite role. (Note: activity groups have been enhanced and are now called roles.) The SAP_ESSUSER activity group is now used as a single role, and constitutes part of the new composite role. The SAP Library includes detailed documentation on the new roles.
SAP_WP_EMPLOYEE contains all previous ESS functions, and has been enhanced by additional functions. The copy of SAP_ESSUSER used by customers should be replaced by a copy of the new SAP_WP_EMPLOYEE role. Roles ensure that functions can be accessed and viewed in the workplace. Therefore, the new role must be used in future. The new SAP_WP_EMPLOYEE role significantly reduces the amount of time spent on customizing activities. (Up to Release 4.6C, menu contents were set up using separate customizing tables, and user authorizations were set up using the activity group.)
The SAP_WP_EMPLOYEE role includes a menu structure and single roles. A composite role represents the user's business view, while a single role reflects the technical view for a logical system (for example, HR, FI, LO, BBP, etc.) or country (DE, CA, US, etc.)
Single roles can be defined for specific countries. Therefore, they provide users with country-specific views. Single roles can also be assigned to logical systems, which means they can be adapted to specific system landscapes.
To minimize the amount of time spent on changing to the new role, use the ESS user generation transaction (HRUSER). This transaction lists all of the users who are not yet assigned to the new SAP_WP_EMPLOYEE role. A pushbutton enables you to assign the role to all users. Central user administration (CUA) ensures that users in the core system receive the appropriate authorization and are distributed to the workplace system so that users find the functions they require in the workplace menu.

By converting to the new role, users are provided with the following new ESS functions:
