Order Hierarchy and Selection with Classification

The steps described below only need to be performed if you want to use classification for the selection or summarization of orders. This is normally only useful when you are using user-defined characteristics in order classification. You can use user-defined characteristics in the following areas:

You can use user-defined characteristics as selection criteria In addition to the master data fields. It is also possible to use only the master data fields for order selection but add classification characteristics for classified orders to the output. This makes these characteristics available in the results list for use as display fields.
If the master data fields for defining a summarization hierarchy do not meet your needs in summarizing orders, you can use classification. This enables you to use classification characteristics to create a hierarchy. You can later roll up costs and quantities of manufacturing orders using these characteristics.

If classification is active for the particular order type, each order is automatically classified in the maintenance of the master data when it is created. This means that the characteristics of classification are filled with the values from the order (such as Created by, controlling area, and so forth) and upated. The order can then be selected using any of this information.

There are two types of characteristics for classification:

These are supplied in the standard system. From a list of available characteristics, you choose those that you want to use, and generate them in each client in which you want to use them for order selection or for the definition of order hierarchies. Most of the reference characteristics are fields that correspond to the master data fields available for order selection and for the definition of summarization hierarchies. Therefore classification is not required in general if you only want to use these characteristics for order selection and summarization.
