For SAP Release 3.0, BRBACKUP supported backups on local disks ( disk ), local ( tape ) and remotely connected ( pipe ) tape devices with manual tape swapping, and on tape devices with automatic tape swapping in fixed sequence ( tape_auto , pipe_auto ).
Backup devices such as jukeboxes and autoloaders, which select tapes in any order and mount them automatically, could until now only be addressed with the interface BACKINT interface.

In SAP R/3 Release 4.0, new types of backup device were introduced ( tape_box for local tape devices and pipe_box for remote tape devices). The new commands, defined by the parameters mount_cmd and dismount_cmd , control the automatic mounting and dismounting of the tapes through the backup device. This means that jukeboxes and autoloaders can administrate several dozen tapes already present in the device.
