Backing up Executable Programs and Other Components of the R/3 System

In addition to the database files and offline redo log files, the following non-database files should also be backed up:

Constant Files
You can find these files, for example, in the subdirectories /usr/sap/<SAPSID>/SYS and <ORACLE_HOME>/dbs . They include executable programs and profiles of the R/3 System and of the Oracle database system. Back up the SAP directories after an R/3 upgrade and the Oracle directories after a database migration.

Temporary Files
You can find these files, for example, in the subdirectory /usr/sap/<SAPSID>/<INSTANCE> . The loss of these files is not that critical, and will not cause data inconsistency. SAP provides tools that can reset the references to these files in the database, when required.

You can use the BRBACKUP program to back up non-database files as well (see Backing Up Non-Database Files and Directories). However, you should only use it for exceptions. Backing up non-database files using BRBACKUP is not a replacement for backing up the file system using operating system means.
