Status of the Database

When installed, the database of the R/3 System has the following initial status:

Changes to the Database

When data is added to the database, its status changes. The following types of change can occur:

This may result in poorer data access times.

If these are smaller than one requested extent, the space is lost, and cannot be used for storing data.

This problem does not occur as frequently as it used to, because the ORACLE system monitor merges at adjacent least areas of free space automatically.

Since the R/3 System usually accesses a table entry using an index, the above changes to the database usually have no negative influence on the time required to access data. However, the changed database status may cause increased run times in connection with full table scans.

Effects of a Reorganization

A reorganization may have the following effects:

· The fill level in the individual blocks is evened out (reduction of internal fragmentation). This may result in increased space requirements.

· Data chains are resolved.
