Starting Up the Database System

You can start ORACLE databases with one instance (non-OPS configuration) and databases with several parallel instances (OPS configuration) using SAPDBA.

Non-OPS Configuration

From the initial SAPDBA menu, choose Startup/Shutdown instance ® Startup... You can start the database system in one of the following modes:

Start the database system in this mode, for example, if you want to reorganize the database. Only the user with RESTRICTED-SESSION privilege (generally the DBA user) has access to the database instance during this operation. If the database instance is already in production operation, you must shut it down and restart it in DBA mode.

The database system issues messages about the progress of the startup in both modes.

OPS Configuration

From the initial SAPDBA menu, choose Startup/Shutdown instance ® Startup... Have a look at the status information. You can start all the instances (Startup all instances) or instances selected with Select remote/local instance (Startup selected instance ...). You can also choose between the aforementioned options Startup normal/RESTRICTED.
