Definition
A subnetwork is a network which covers only part of a project and is linked in relationships with other subnetworks in the same project.
Use
You can use subnetworks to refine and detail your networks as planning progresses. The system treats subnetworks and networks the same, that is, you can plan dates, capacities, costs, materials and production resource/tools also with a subnetwork.

Structure
When creating a subnetwork, you can copy the following data from the superior network and from the activity to which the subnetwork adds detail:

Sales order |
The sales order can be assigned to the network or the relevant WBS. | |

The network profile for the superior network is not copied into the subnetwork. Materials and PRTs remain assigned to the activity in the superior network.
Control Keys
Among other things, the control key regulates whether dates, capacity requirements, and plan costs are determined and recorded. In Customizing for the Project System, you set the relevant indicators in the control key
For example, if you want to add detail to the dates, capacity requirements, and planned costs for the superior activity by means of the activities in the subnetwork, set the indicators in the control key as follows:

When you create a subnetwork, the activity in the superior network receives a control key which you have defined in Define Parameters for Subnetworks in the Project System IMG. If the activity already had a control key, the new one overwrites it. The activities in the subnetwork receive their control keys from the network profile.

In the Project Information System you can analyze the dates of the subnetwork together with the dates of the superior network.

Notes on Using Plant Maintenance Orders as Subnetworks
You can also use plant maintenance orders to add detail to an activity. You make the assignment to the superior network and its activity in the plant maintenance order itself. Note the following:
