A resource category groups resources according to their characteristics and use. The resource category controls the screen sequence and field selection. This means it determines which data is to be maintained for the resource.

A resource category is user-defined and is set up in Customizing.

When you create a resource, you assign a resource category to it.

Resource categories can be used, for example, to distinguish between the following resources in the standard system:

• Labor

• Processing unit

• Storage resources

• Processing unit / storage resource

Depending on the resource category and its screen sequence, you have links to the following objects:

• Person or organizational unit in personnel administration

• Cost center and activity types

• Capacity categories

• Time unit for resources that are only used in production. You assign this capacity type to the resource categories "labor" and "processing unit".
• Volume unit / unit of measure for resources that are only used for storage. You assign this capacity type to the resource category "storage resource"
• Time unit and volume unit / unit of measure for resources that are used for storage and production. You assign this capacity type to the resource category "processing unit / storage resource".
