Process Data Evaluation Using External Tools

The data available within the R/3 System is saved in database tables that are managed from within R/3 using the ABAP/4 Dictionary. In the area of PP-PI, the data is organized in the following way on the database:

Master and planning data (such as material, resource and order data) is organized in data structures defined by SAP. These data structures are updated whenever a corresponding object is saved within the R/3 System.

Actual process data reported via process messages is organized in database tables defined by the user via the ABAP/4 Dictionary. These tables are updated whenever a process message is sent to them via process management.

The data stored on the database can be accessed using any external tool that supports the database interface software ODBC (Open Database Connectivity) and, in the case of a client server architechture, the network interface software SQL*NET. Via this option, you obtain a great freedom in your choice of an evaluation tool as well as the design of evaluations that suit your purpose. Your evaluations are no longer limited to R/3 but can include any information stored on the database, no matter from where they originate.
