 Expansion Time

Different expansion times for the different symbol types are specified in Customizing for Basic Data and Tools in the detail view of IMG activity Check and Specify Report Symbols .

The following expansion times are defined in the standard system:

Symbol Type

Expansion Time

Descriptor for report templates (symbol key, for example, EHS_L_TEXT )

0 : Symbol value is constant

Specification

10 : Symbol value is specification-dependent

Descriptor for cover sheets and acknowledgements of receipt (symbol key, for example, EHS_H_TEXT )

20 : Symbol value is application-dependent

Parameter

20 : Symbol value is application-dependent

Note Note

When using symbol type Descriptor , you need to differentiate whether the descriptor (technically a phrase) is used for a report template or a cover sheet.

For certain repeating groups, the expansion time 10 always applies (see Repeating Groups ).

End of the note.

During the first generation stage, the system generates reports from report templates. The system expands symbol types with an expansion time of 0 and 10 only.

During the second generation stage, the system generates final reports from reports and final cover sheets from cover sheet templates. The system expands symbol types with an expansion time of 20 only.

Symbols of type Descriptor can be expanded on cover sheets only if they have an expansion time of 20 . The symbol key for this case is EHS_H_TEXT in the standard system.

Note Note

The first generation stage is skipped for reports without specification references. All symbols are expanded in the second generation stage. This means that the second generation stage is currently executed with the expansion interval 0-20 so that the descriptors that were created with the symbol key EHS_L_TEXT are also expanded.

End of the note.

Recommendation Recommendation

We recommend that you continue to create descriptors for cover sheets and acknowledgements of receipt with symbol keys whose expansion time is 20 so that it will still be possible at a later stage to separate them.

End of the recommendation.
