Structure

The TREX/BWA-based variant 2 of Embedded Search comprises the following two software components:

  • ABAP component

The ABAP component of Embedded Search allows extraction of data from SAP applications for indexing by TREX or SAP Business Warehouse Accelerator (BWA).

  • Search and Classification (TREX) or SAP Business Warehouse Accelerator (BWA)

Search and Classification (TREX) and SAP Business Warehouse Accelerator index the data that is extracted from the ABAP system.

    Note

Note that some new functions in Embedded Search require SAP Business Warehouse Accelerator (BWA). You can find a list of these functions in the release notes.

To run Embedded Search with the existing scope of functions, you can continue to use Search and Classification (TREX).

Process

Once you have worked through the post-installation tasks for Embedded Search, applications can use Embedded Search.

The figure below illustrates the process flows for the indexing time and runtime.

Indexing time: Embedded Search checks at scheduled times for changes to the indexable SAP system data. The changes to the data are extracted and passed to Search and Classification (TREX) or SAP Business Warehouse Accelerator, where they are added to the search index.

Runtime: A search application in the SAP system sends a search query to Embedded Search. This forwards the query to Search and Classification (TREX) or SAP Business Warehouse Accelerator, which uses search indexes to form a search result and passes this result to Embedded Search. Embedded Search sends the search result to the search application.

Note

Embedded Search is the Enterprise Search component in SAP NetWeaver Application Server ABAP. It can happen that Embedded Search is called Enterprise Search (ABAP) in the SAP application documentation.
