Object documentationSpecification Type

Exact division of specifications according to their usage and meaning in the company.

Each specification belongs to one specification type. The specification type divides the specification category. By assigning a specification type, a specification is assigned to its exact role in the company.

You assign the specification type to a specification when you create it. You define the specification types in Customizing for Basic Data and Tools under Specify Specification Types. You specify the following for each specification type:

  • You assign the specification type to one or more specification categories.

  • You specify, whether it is permitted to assign materials to the specifications of the specification type.

  • You specify to which specification types a specification must belong so that it can be used as the source specification in a reference or inheritance relationship with a specification of the specification type.

  • You specify to which number range group the specification type is assigned. You can specify additional functions that check the assigned specification keys for correct syntax.

  • If necessary, you specify an icon that is displayed in the workbench of the navigation and detail areas in front of the individual specifications of that specification type. By assigning different icons to different specification types, you can immediately recognize in the navigation and detail areas to which specification type a specification belongs.

Example

In the standard delivery, the following specification types are delivered for the Substance specification category:

  • Real substance

A real substance is a substance that is physically present in the company

In the standard delivery, you can assign one or more materials to one real substance. You can assess the value assessment types of a real substance yourself or copy it using a reference or an inheritance of listed substances.

  • Real substance group

You use real substance groups to map real substance families that possess the same properties.

  • Listed substance

A listed substance is a substance whose properties are described in laws and in literature.

Unlike real substances, listed substances are not manufactured, traded, or purchased. You can use a listed substance as a "properties model" for a real substance by using the listed substance as a source specification in a reference or inheritance relationship.

  • Listed substance group

You use listed substance groups to map listed substance families that possess the same properties.

  • Copy template

A copy template supports the creation of a specification for a new substance with predefined assessments.

  • External real substance

The uses and exposure scenarios of the delivered materials are assigned to specifications for which this specification type is defined. This data of the delivered materials is provided by the supplier, for example, using extended safety data sheets as inbound documents. Materials are not assigned to specifications with specification type External Real Substance.

  • Exposure scenario

Exposure scenarios that are assigned to a real or pure substance in the value assignment type Use and Exposure Scenario (SAP_EHS_1027_001) are created as specifications with this specification type. This means that the exposure scenarios are linked to the real or pure substances by means of the list in the value assignment type Use and Exposure Scenario.
