Management of Stock in SAP EWM, SAP SPM, and SAP APO

There are different means of managing stock in the components SAP EWM, SAP Service Parts Management (SPM) in ERP, and SAP APO:

  • SAP EWM manages stock in stock types

The system can also provide information about the current stock situation on storage bin level. There are six stock types in standard Customizing for SAP EWM:

  • F1: Unrestricted-Use in Putaway
  • Q1: Stock in Quality Inspection in Putaway
  • B1: Blocked in Putaway
  • F2: Unrestricted-Use Warehouse
  • Q2: Stock in QI in Warehouse
  • B2: Blocked Warehouse

  • SAP SPMmanages stock in stock types and storage locations

The system can also provide information about the material valuation.

When SAP SPM is connected to SAP EWM, standard Customizing in SAP EWM maps the stock types for stock in putaway and the stock types for stock in the warehouse to separate storage locations in SAP SPM.

The following is an example of a possible mapping:

  • F: Unrestricted-use stock in storage location, for example, 001
  • X: Quality-inspection stock in storage location, for example, 001
  • S: Blocked stock in storage location, for example, 001
  • F: Unrestricted-use stock in storage location, for example, 002
  • X: Quality-inspection stock in storage location, for example, 002
  • S: Blocked stock in storage location, for example, 002

  • SAP APO manages stock in Available-to-Promise (ATP) categories

The system can also provide information about the availability of a stock quantity.

When SAP APO is connected to SAP SPM, you define six ATP categories in standard Customizing in SAP APO:

F1: Unrestricted Stock in Putaway

Q1: Quality Inspection Stock in Putaway

B1: Blocked Stock in Putaway

F2: Unrestricted Stock in Warehouse

Q2: Quality Inspection Stock in Warehouse

B2: Blocked Stock in Warehouse

You can define the stock types in Customizing in SAP EWM to limit the availability of the stock in SAP APO during the putaway process (for example, stock type F1 may be available only for rush orders).

When the goods receipt is posted, the SAP EWM stock is stored in one of the putaway storage types (for example, the goods receipt area) and is now available in SAP EWM, which means that it can be moved to the next putaway storage type or to the final bin.

In SAP SPM, the stock is stored in a storage location, which belongs to valuated stock.

In SAP APO, the stock is stored in an ATP category, which, for example, is only available for certain types of orders, such as rush orders.

The stock situation can only be considered in relation to the component that displays the stock information.

You have 100 air filters in yourDetroitwarehouse. If your warehouse department displays the stock of these air filters, it sees that these air filters are stored in one or several bins and are available (in other words, they can be moved within the warehouse). If your accounting department displays the stock of these air filters in SAP SPM, it sees that this stock is unrestricted-use stock in the storage location for full availability and that it is valuated. If your production planning department displays the stock of these air filters in SAP SPM, it sees that a quantity of 100 air filters is available to promise (available for sale).

Availability has a different meaning in SAP EWM and SAP APO:

In SAP EWM, “available” means that a quantity is not assigned to an open transfer order, that is to say, it is possible to move the quantity to another storage bin (SAP EWM-internal transfer).

In SAP APO, “available” means that a quantity is available for ATP or planning purposes.
