Switchable Query Components in the Switch FrameworkLocate this document in the navigation structure

Use
Note

This documentation is aimed at the following target groups:

  • Business Content developers

  • Customer power users who edit queries from the Business Content

  • System administrators

All query components that are not reusable (characteristics, attributes, structure elements, conditions, exceptions and cells) are switchable in the Switch Framework. This allows you to extensively control the visibility of the query components that are supplied with the Business Content.

The switchable query components can be assigned to individual switches in the Switch Framework. The assignment of switches to Business Functions shows or hides the query components. You can activate the business functions in the BI system and then make a limited number of assigned elements visible. This means that you only see the required Business Content query components in the system. The other components remain hidden but you can activate them if required. Besides being able to use business functions and switches from the BI system, you can also replicate the switches of the source system business functions (including their status) in the BI system.

The connection to the Switch Framework is also used for performance optimization. Every switchable query component that is not active is processed as if it were defined in the query.

What You Need to Know

  • If a switchable query component is used in a different query component (for example, formula, condition, exception), this query component is also visible. This means that both query components only become visible if you activate the corresponding business function in the system.

  • A structure that contains switchable structure components cannot be saved as a reusable structure.

  • If you delete the switch of a switchable query component in Query Designer, then you need to delete the switches of all objects that use this query component.

  • If you cannot see one or more query components in a Business Conent query (that contains switchable query components), check if the relevant switches have been replicated from the source system. It may be necessary to check the status of the switch in the source system and in the BI system.

Activities
  • To make a query component switchable, assign a name in the Switch field in the Properties dialog of the query component on the Content tab. A symbol is used in Query Designer to show that the query component is switchable.

  • To delete a switch, remove the switch name displayed on the Content tab in the Properties tab of the query component.

Caution

Note that the Content tab is only visible under the following circumstances:

  • You are in a system where Business Content is developed (content system).

  • You are editing a query that has been activated in the Business Content and has at least one switch.

With queries created again in customer systems, the Content tab is not available in Query Designer.
