Specifying Semantics and Source for Open ODS ViewLocate this document in the navigation structure

In the dialog box for creating an Open ODS view in the BW modeling tools, you can specify the technical name and description for the InfoArea assignment, the InfoArea assignment for semantics and the source of the Open ODS view.

Prerequisites

  • For transformations as sources of Open ODS views:

You can use a transformation as the source for the Open ODS view provided that you have created the corresponding data flow:

  • For DataStore objects (advanced) as sources of Open ODS views:

DataStore objects for which all reporting takes place on the active table are supported.

Procedure

  1. Select an InfoArea using Browse.
The InfoArea that you selected the last time you opened the dialog box is displayed as the default entry.
Tip You can access the content assist function by pressing Ctrl + Space.
  2. To access the Open ODS faster next time you are here, we recommend setting the Add to Favorites flag.
  3. Enter a technical name for the Open ODS view under Name. A maximum of 12 characters can be entered for the name.
  4. Enter a description for the Open ODS view under Description.
  5. Select the semantics (facts, master data, texts).
  6. Under Source Type, select which type of source object should be used as the basis for the Open ODS view. You may need to make further entries, depending on the source type.
For sources of type DataSource (BW):
    1. In the DataSource field, use Browse or auto-complete to select a DataSource as the source object of the Open ODS view.
The DataSource information is displayed using the following convention: [<technical name of DataSource>] <description of DataSource> (name of source system).
The Source System field shows the source system, which the selected DataSource belongs to.
Note First, also select the source system that the DataSource belongs to, which you want to use as a source object for the Open ODS view. In the DataSource field, your choice is now limited to the DataSources that belong to the selected source system.
For sources of type Database Table or View:
    1. In the DB Object Schema field, select the schema where the table or view is located, which you want to use as the source object for the Open ODS view. You can choose from the schemas of the SAP HANA database, which the BW system runs on.
A DB Connect source system is used to access the data in the source. The schema is specified in the configuration of the DB Connect source system. If a source system has already been defined for the DB object schema, this system is displayed in the Source System field. If there are multiple source systems, select the required system using Browse or auto-complete. If there is no source system for the schema, it is created when the Open ODS view is created. In this case, the Source System field displays a suggested name that you can overwrite. The proposal is derived from the schema name.
Note You can also select a source system directly. The schema that the source system was defined for is then displayed in the DB Object Schema field.
    2. In the DB Object Name field, use Browse or auto-complete to select the table or view as the source object of the Open ODS view.
For sources of type Virtual Table Using HANA Smart Data Access:
    1. Under Remote Source, select the database that is available by using SAP HANA Smart Data Access.
    2. Under DB Object Schema, select the schema where the table or view is located, which you want to use as the source object for the Open ODS view. You can choose from the schemas of the database that you previously selected.

A DB Connect source system is used to access the data in the source. The remote source and the schema are specified in the configuration of the DB Connect source system. If a source system has already been defined for the DB object schema of the remote source, this system is displayed in the Source System field. If there is no source system for this combination, it is created when the Open ODS view is created. You can enter a name for this source system. If you do not enter a name and you choose Finish in the next step (after having entered a table or view), a dialog box opens with an alternative name suggestion for the source system that you want to create. The proposal is derived from the remote source name. You can overwrite the proposal.

Note If the source system already exists for the Open ODS view that you want to create, you can select this system directly under Source System using Browse or auto-complete (instead of selecting the remote source and the DB object schema). The dialog box opens also shows the remote source and the DB object schema of the source system.
    3. In the DB Object Name field, use Browse or auto-complete to select the table or view as the source object of the Open ODS view.
    For sources of type Transformation:
    1. Under Start of the navigation path Source Next navigation step Object Name End of the navigation path, choose Browse or auto-complete to select the DataSource whose transformation shouls serve as the source object of the Open ODS view. By selecting a DataSource, you can view technical information, such as source system, InfoSource name and transformation ID.
The system then displays information about the source and target of the transformation in the Start of the navigation path Target Next navigation step Object Name End of the navigation path, Start of the navigation path Source Next navigation step Object Name End of the navigation path and Source System fields.
Note You can also select the InfoSource directly.
For sources of type DataStore object (advanced):
    1. In the DataStore Object (Advanced) field, use Browse or auto-complete to select the DataStore object as the source object of the Open ODS view.
  7. Choose Finish.
The Open ODS View Editor appears.
