Modeling Data Flows for Characteristics with Direct AccessLocate this document in the navigation structure

Context

You can directly access the data in the source system for an InfoObject of type characteristic that you have selected for use as an InfoProvider.

This allows you to avoid loading master data. Note, however, that direct access to data has a negative impact on query performance. As with other VirtualProviders, you have to decide whether direct access to data is actually useful in the specific case in which you want to use it.

Procedure

  1. You are in InfoObject maintenance. On tab page Master Data/Texts, assign an InfoArea to the characteristic and choose Direct as the type of master data access.

  2. Activate the characteristic.

  3. In the Data Warehousing Workbench under Modeling, select the InfoProvider tree.

  4. Navigate to your InfoArea. In the context menu of the attributes or texts for your characteristic, choose Create Transformation.

  5. Define the transformation rules and activate them.

  6. In the context menu of the attributes or texts for your characteristic, choose Create Data Transfer Process. DTP for Direct Access is the default value for the DTP type.

  7. Select the source. Activate the data transfer process. See Creating Data Transfer Process for Direct Access. When you activate the DTP, the system automatically activates direct access.

Results

You can access data in the source system directly for this characteristic. Furthermore, you can create additional DTPs for the characteristic. If you create additional DTPs for the characteristic, you can deactivate direct access to a particular source system again, depending on the source system from which you want to read data. In the context menu of the attributes or texts for your characteristic, choose Activate Direct Access.
