Modeling data in the BW principally involves data staging and modeling the layers of a Data Warehouse.

Modeling Based on the BW Layer Architecture

A multi-layer architecture serves to integrate data from heterogeneous sources, to transform, consolidate, clean up and store this data, and stage it efficiently for analysis and interpretation purposes in the BW system.. We differentiate between two main layers here: The Enterprise Data Warehouse layer and the Architected Data Mart layer.

If you are using a SAP HANA database, you are supported by the new holistic layer architecture (LSA++). The flexible, consistent core of the EDW remains in place. In the LSA++, special services for operational, flexible data have been added.

Modeling Environments

Data Warehousing Workbench in the BW System

For data modeling, you can use the Data Warehousing Workbench. The graphical user interface makes it easier for you to create data flows. You can model top-down data flows using this interface. SAP provides you with predefined data flow templates. These are best practice models that help you to create optimized models.

You can also create bottom-up objects by using the object trees in the Data Warehousing Workbench. Objects created in this way can then be used in the graphical data flow modeling.

For information about creating individual objects, read the relevant object documentation.

BW Modeling Tools in Eclipse

Another modeling environment is provided by the BW Modeling tools. You can use these if your BW system is running on the SAP HANA database. The BW Modeling tools provide an Eclipse-based integrated modeling environment for the management and maintenance of BW metadata objects. They are integrated with the ABAP Development Tools and with SAP HANA modeling, and make it possible to use SAP HANA elements in BW metadata objects, such as CompositeProviders. The BW modeling tools currently provide native Eclipse-based editors for Open ODS views and CompositeProviders.
