Creating DataSources for ODP Source SystemsLocate this document in the navigation structure

Use

Before you can transfer data from an ODP source system, the metadata from the source must be available in BW in the form of a DataSource.

Prerequisites

If there are no suitable application components to group the DataSources with, create an application component in the DataSource tree for the ODP source system.

Procedure

You are in the DataSource tree in the Data Warehousing Workbench.

  1. Select the application component that you want to create the DataSource in and choose Create DataSource.

  2. A dialog box opens. Select the Operational Data Provider and data source.

The connection to the ODP source is established. In input help, you can see the available operational data providers from the system connected via ODP. With sources that have their ODPs in a hierarchy, you can select the ODP from the hierarchy by choosing Selection. You can select ODPs for SAP HANA via the package hierarchy for example, and ODPs from BW systems (data mart scenario) via the InfoArea hierarchy.

Note In the input help for the operational data provider, the system also displays the ID for the semantics of the operational data provider - either in a separate column in the input help or as a suffix of the name of the operational data provider. The ID has the following meaning:
    Suffix Meaning
    F Transaction Data/Facts
    P Master Data/Attributes
    Q Time-Dependent Master Data/Attributes
    T Texts
    H Hierarchies

You can also use the semantics to restrict the selection of ODPs, provided that this is supported by the source. Once you have made a selection, the system displays the technical name and description of the operational data provider, together with its semantics.

    Note

For information about how operational data providers are determined from SAP HANA modeling views, see Notes about transferring data from SAP HANA using ODP.

  3. The name and type of the DataSource are taken from the operational data provider. Enter a technical name for the DataSource, select the type of DataSource (a suitable type for the source object).

  4. Choose Apply.

    The DataSource maintenance screen appears.

  5. Go to the General tab and enter descriptions for the DataSource (short, medium, long).

  6. Go to the Extraction tab page.

    1. The system displays Extraction from SAP System via Operational Data Provisioning as the adapter for the DataSource.

Choose Properties if you want to display the general adapter properties.

    2. Define the delta process for the DataSource. Whether a delta procedure can be used - and which one - depends on the source and the selected Operational Data Provider.

      Note

Note that the two contexts BYD for SAP Business ByDesign systems and HANA for SAP HANA do not offer deltas in the source.

    3. Direct access via data transfer process (DTP) and real-time data acquisition is not supported for transferring data from ODP source systems.

  7. Go to the Proposal tab page.

The BW system requests the ODP field list of the source and displays this as a proposal for the DataSource's structure or field list. The system also displays the ABAP type and properties for each field. You can change the field names of the DataSource.

  8. Go to the Fields tab page.

You can make further changes to the DataSource's field list here.

    Note

If you have not made any changes to the field names in the Proposal tab: ODP fields whose names do not meet the ABAP DDIC conditions and are therefore not suitable as PSA field names (field with more than 16 characters for example, or fields that contain special characters), are automatically renamed by the system and displayed accordingly in the Fields tab.

    1. Under Transfer, specify the decision-relevant DataSource fields that you want to be available for extraction and transferred to BW.

    2. Specify whether the source provides the data in the internal or external format.

    3. If you choose the external format, make sure that the output length of the field (external length) is correct. Change the entries if necessary.

    4. If necessary, specify a conversion routine that converts data from an external format into an internal format.

    5. If necessary, define whether the data to be selected is language-dependent or time-dependent in the field type.

  9. Check, save and activate the DataSource.

  10. Go to the Preview tab.

If you select Read Preview Data, the number of data records you specified in your field selection is displayed in a preview.

This function allows you to check whether the data formats and data are correct.

    Note

The preview uses the direct access to read the data.

Result

The DataSource is created and is visible in the Data Warehousing Workbench in the DataSource overview for the ODP source system in the application component. When you activate the DataSource, the system generates a PSA table and a transfer program.

You can now create an InfoPackage. You define the selections for the data request in the InfoPackage. The data can be loaded into the PSA of the DataSource.

A setting in the data transfer process allows you to load the data into the InfoProvider directly without the need to load it into the PSA via an InfoPackage first.

In the BW system, you can monitor the data transfer with the monitor for extraction and data transfer processes. In the source, you can monitor the extraction and replication using the delta queues. The exception here is SAP ByDesign systems, as they do not use delta queues when implementing the ODP framework.
