Use

With the tools and processes in Software Logistics you can manage the system landscape in all lifecycle phases. Besides initial implementation of an application, the tools also support on-going system optimization and adaptation to evolving demands, as well as implementing additional functions.

Note

Some software logistics tools are delivered and regularly updated with the Software Logistics Toolset( SL Toolset). For more information about the documentation of these tools, see http://help.sap.com/sltoolset.

Features

Technical Implementation

In a system landscape you regularly have to implement new functions either by adding new systems to an existing landscape or by creating a completely new landscape.

Firstly you install the required components using the SAP installation tools. Then you execute the technical configuration of the installed systems. To set up and operate the system landscape, the system copy offers a procedure that supports both ABAP and Java components. In addition to this you can execute a platform change (operating system, database, or both) using the migration procedure.

Installation

You can set up a new system landscape or add further scenarios to your system landscape and reuse existing system and components for it. The central document for implementing SAP NetWeaver is the Master Guide. This document contains links to all documents that you need for implementation. You can find the Master Guide in the SAP Service Marketplace under service.sap.com/instguidesNW.

Configuration of SAP NetWeaver

After installing a system landscape you can execute the technical configuration of the system (for example, create users, configure ports) with the Solution Manager. For many installable units, automation tools provide support for your configuration tasks. For more information, see the Solution Life Cycle Management section.

System Copy and Migration

To set up your landscape or to create consistent duplicates for test or development purposes, you can copy SAP systems, both in ABAP and in Java. You can also migrate SAP systems to a different operating system or database. For further information, see the SAP Community Network under http://scn.sap.com/docs/DOC_8324Information published on SAP site.

Software Change Management

Software Change Management standardizes and automates the distribution of software in system landscapes.

Note

Information about transports of SAP HANA content can be found under Transport Scenarios for SAP HANA Content.

Change and Transport System (CTS)

You can use the Change and Transport System (CTS) (SAP NetWeaver AS for ABAP) to organize developments projects in the ABAP Workbench and customizing projects and to transport your changes to the SAP systems of your system landscape. You can also use the Enhanced Change and Transport System to transport Java objects and non-ABAP objects together with the ABAP objects in your system landscape.

Software Maintenance

Software maintenance includes system optimization by importing corrections in the form of SAP Notes or Support Packages, the enhancement of your system landscape by additional functionality through installing add-ons, as well as the upgrade to a new release of the SAP software. You can plan your maintenance activities with the Maintenance Optimizer in SAP Solution Manager.

Note

For information about special requirements for software maintenance for ABAP for SAP HANA applications, see Special Software Maintenance Features for ABAP for SAP HANA.

Note Assistant

To implement minor program corrections or updates from SAP Notes, you can use the Note Assistant for SAP NetWeaver AS for ABAP.

Importing Support Packages

We recommend that you import Support Packages at regular intervals to keep your system as up-to-date as possible. You have the following options:

  • Support Package Manager

This option is suitable for incorporating a small number of Support Packages (approximately up to 50).

For more information about ABAP Support Package Manager, see Support Package Manager.

  • Software Update Manager (SUM)

This option is suitable for incorporating large numbers of Support Packages, Support Package Stacks or downtime-critical systems, as you can reduce the downtime during the import of Support Packages considerably by using the SUM.

For more information about SUM, see http://help.sap.com/sltoolset.

Installing Add-Ons

SAP delivers individual components and function enhancements as add-ons, for example, industry solutions. You can import add-ons with the SAP Add-On Installation Tool.

For more information, see Add-On Installation Tool.

If you require new functions in Java, you can carry out deployment for both additional SAP components and for non-SAP software components using the Software Update Manager. For more information about Software Update Manager, see http://help.sap.com/sltoolset.

Installing Enhancement Packages

SAP Enhancement Packages enable you to install and activate new functions without having to perform a release upgrade.

We recommend that you install SAP Enhancement Packages in combination with the latest available Support Package Stack. This reduces the effort required for installation, testing, and adaptations. With this strategy, you can install SAP Enhancement Packages together with Support Package Stacks as part of standard maintenance activities.

Use the Software Update Manager (SUM) to install an SAP Enhancement Package on an existing SAP-NetWeaver-based system.

More information about using SUM can be found under http://help.sap.com/sltoolset.

Upgrade

You can perform upgrades for your IT and business scenarios. The central document for SAP NetWeaver upgrades is the Upgrade Master Guide. This document contains links to all documents that you need when performing an upgrade. You can find the Upgrade Master Guide in the SAP Service Marketplace under http://service.sap.com/instguidesNWInformation published on SAP site.
