Function documentationPrint Options

Subject to certain prerequisites, an output device can support printing with additional print options. If this is the case, there is a Print Options tab page in the Device Definition. Print options can be set both in the Output Controller (transaction SP01) and in the print dialog for end users. The options and option values that can actually be used for the print request depend on the technical prerequisites of the connected printer and on the default settings for the device type.

Prerequisites

  • The print options are always supported when printing SAPscript documents and SAP Smart Forms. To be able to also use the print options for SAP Interactive Forms by Adobe, the prerequisites describes in SAP Note 1729666 must be fulfilled.

  • When printing SAPscript documents and SAP Smart Forms, the print options are only available if the output device uses a device type that supports the format type "POSS". The Print Options tab page is only visible for this output device in transaction SPAD if this is the case.

  • When printing SAP Interactive Forms, the print options are available for all device types that generate the printer languages PCL, PostScript, or PDF.

  • Depending on the device type used, different print options might be supported when printing SAPscript and SAP Smart Forms documents than for SAP Interactive Forms. To display these differences in transaction SPAD (tab page Start of the navigation path Print Options Next navigation step column 'Is Supported By' End of the navigation path), execute report RSPO0021. When you run the report, enter IFBA_SUPP_POSS as the name of the spool option and select Activate Entry.

Features

Print options are stored in the attributes of the device type. The following options are available:

  • Input Tray

  • Output Tray

  • Color Printing

  • Double-Sided Printing

  • Stapling Function

  • Punch Function

  • Job Separation

  • Page Binding

  • User Password

Each of the print options can contain multiple values. For example, for the option Stapling Function, there can be values such as “Top-left corner”, "Top center“, “Bottom right”; and for Double-Sided Printing, “Bind on long edge“ or “Bind on short edge“. End users can select these option values in the print dialog box.

In addition to the options listed above, there are three variable options, three list options, and three input field options that vendors of device types can define as they wish.

Note Note

The vendors assign the print options to the device types. The descriptions for the options (see list) are specified by SAP; however, the respective values can vary depending on the vendor.

For examples, see the last section.

End of the note.

Activities

Note that the print options and their values are predefined for each device type. As an administrator, you can deactivate options or individual option values, or define them as preselected values for an output device.

For more information, see Managing Print Options.

Most print options can have many different values. The table below contains some typical examples.

Otherwise color printing will not work when printing SAPscript documents and SAP Smart Forms despite the settings in the print options. For more information, see SAP Note 410727.

For SAP Interactive Forms, the Color Printing option is available if you have used report RSPO0022 to set up different XDC files for grayscale printing and color printing. It controls which XDC file is used for printing. For more information, see Administering XDC Files for SAP Device Types.
