License Management

In the License Management view, you access information about how your license data (licenses and maintenance certificates) is distributed.

You view the validity of existing licenses and maintenance certificates in the managed systems and can monitor the status of new licenses and maintenance certificates.

Distributing Licenses and Maintenance Certificates

New licenses and maintenance certificates for managed systems, which the background job REFRESH_ADMIN_DATA_FROM_SUPPORT delivers to the SAP Solution Manager system, are generated in SAP Global Support Backbone. The licenses and maintenance certificates are available locally on the SAP Solution Manager system and can be downloaded manually.

You can select whether to automatically distribute licenses and maintenance certificates from the SAP Solution Manager system to the managed systems. For further information about the technical process, see Automatic Distribution of License Data.

Overview of License Data and License Data Distribution

The System Overview view displays information about licenses and maintenance certificates on your managed systems. In addition to basic information relevant to your systems, such as extended system ID and the status of automatic license distribution, it displays:

Maintenance contract validity
The current product version and highest possible release

The status of licenses or maintenance certificates on the managed systems

For all managed systems, existing licenses and maintenance certificates are read from the LMDB. This information is synchronized from the System Landscape Directory. For more information, see Connecting LMDB to System Landscape Directory (SLD). The following status values are possible:

Status	License	Maintenance certificate
Red	The Valid to date has been exceeded.	Valid to has been exceeded. A system check has determined that the maintenance certificate does not exist.
Yellow	The Valid to date will be reached in less than 30 days.	Valid to will be reached in less than 30 days. A system check has determined that the maintenance certificate still exists.
Green	The license is valid.	The maintenance certificate is installed and valid.
Gray	No data. Rating is not possible.	No data. Rating is not possible.

The status of licenses or maintenance certificates received from SAP Global Support Backbone.

The following status values are possible:

Status	License	Maintenance certificate
Red	No license.	The Valid to date has been exceeded.
Yellow	—	The Valid to date will be reached in less than 30 days.
Green	License is available.	Maintenance certificate is available.

By choosing a specific system, you get the following detailed information, which License Management uses as the basis for the displayed status values:

License data from the managed system.
This is determined by the SAP Solution Manager system
License data sent from the SAP Global Support Backbone.
This data can be distributed to the managed system
Log messages for the managed systems
These can be error messages or success messages for the license data found and transferred.

Personalizing the system overview can deactivate the filters when you go from the Overview view to the License Management view.

Automatically Distributing Licenses and Maintenance Certificates

When automatic license management is active, license and maintenance data is automatically shared. For ABAP systems, this occurs when the ABAP system directly requests it. For Java systems, the LICENSE DISTRIBUTION extractor calls the license data.

To activate or deactivate automatic license distribution for managed systems, proceed as follows:

In the System Overview, select at least one managed system.
Under Automatic Distribution, choose either Activate Automatic Distribution or Deactivate Automatic Distribution.
The Automatic Distribution Status column shows the new status.

Downloading Licenses and Maintenance Certificates

If licenses and maintenance certificates for a managed system have been transferred from SAP Global Support Backbone and saved on the SAP Solution Manager system, you can download the license data and save it locally as a text file.

You can upload these text files to the license application of the managed systems, for example, SAP License Management (transaction SLICENSE) for ABAP systems.

To download license data for managed systems, from the SAP Solution Manager system:

In the System Overview view, select at least one managed system.
Choose Download Licenses.
To save the licenses and maintenance certificates, select the target directory.
The license of a system is saved as a text file. The licenses for several systems are grouped as text files, into a ZIP file, and saved.

License Management for Customers of Service Providers

As the customer of a service provider, you can access license management. Only the systems associated with your customer number are displayed. You may be assigned to more than one customer number.

You filter the systems by customer number, with the Customer value help. If you do not select a customer number, all systems are displayed.

Note Note

If the managed systems are connected to the SAP Solution Manager system and all prerequisites are fulfilled, you can activate automatic license and maintenance certificate distribution.

If managed systems are not connected to the SAP Solution Manager system, you can download licenses and maintenance certificates from the SAP Solution Manager system manually.
