In SAP Solution Manager, you can use work modes. These work modes specify downtimes for the managed systems and the reasons for the downtimes (technical work modes), as well as different types of business hours (business work modes). For more information, see: Managing Work Modes.

The work modes also include business hours and peak business hours. To correctly schedule these work modes, and to optimize their scheduling in a productive system, you should stay informed in detail about the workload of your managed systems. There are therefore three reports that display the development of the following metrics over the week:

  • Dialog response time

  • Dialog steps

  • CPU load

  • Logged-on users

  • System availability

Three different reports are available to allow you to analyze the work modes of your managed systems:

  • Display Workload for the Planning of the (Peak) Business Times

This report displays, at a glance, the development of the above metrics during a typical week; the values for the last three months are used for this report. This report is particularly well-suited to helping you initially determine which periods you should define as (peak) business hours.

  • Display Workload to Check the (Peak) Business Times

This report displays the development of one of the metrics listed above during a typical week. You can select the desired metric. The (peak) business times are also shown in the graphic, allowing you to check your current settings for these periods.

  • Displaying Workload to Check the Work Modes

This report displays one of the above metrics for a particular week. You can select the desired metric. The periods for the various work modes are also shown in the graphic, allowing you to answer the following questions, for example:

    • Were there downtimes during (peak) business hours?

    • Do the (peak) business hours for this week match the times with the maximum workload?

Procedure

Displaying the Workload for the Planning of the (Peak) Business Times

To display the workload for a technical system or an instance to obtain data to define business hours or peak business hours, proceed as follows:

  1. In the Technical Administration or SAP Solution Manager Administration work center, choose the Work Mode Management entry in the navigation area.

  2. A list of the managed systems appears; select the desired systems, and choose the Work Mode Management button. You can display this function in the work center itself (Embedded) or in a new window (Open New Window).

  3. In this window, select the desired technical system or the desired instance, and choose Average Component Usage. You can choose whether to display data for the last four weeks or the last 12 weeks.

  4. The report displays the most important workload metrics for the selected system during the selected period; you can therefore identify how intensively the system or instance is used at different times during a typical week, and use this data to define the (peak) business hours. Data is also available for the individual days of the week. Choose a day of the week to see the system load metrics for that day of the week.

Displaying the Workload to Check the (Peak) Business Times

To display the workload of a system so that you can check that the times are set correctly for the scheduling of business times, proceed as follows:

  3. Select a system in this window, and under Work Modes for (Technical) System <system name>, choose Schedule Work Modes (see also Plan Work Modes).

  4. You go to the screen for scheduling work modes. Choose the business time to be scheduled, in the Type/Phase drop-down list. To display the average distribution of the workload for a typical week, as a decision-making aid, choose the Compare with System Load button. You can choose whether to display data for the last four weeks or the last 12 weeks.

  5. The report displays the most important workload metrics for the selected system during the selected period; choose which metric you want to display. The report also shows the business work mode that you want to schedule or record. In this way, you can determine whether and how this work mode matches the average workload for a typical week.

Displaying Workload to Check the Work Modes

To display the most important metrics for the workload of a system or an instance in connection with the respective work mode for a particular week, proceed as follows:

  3. Select the desired technical system or instance for which you want to analyze the workload, and expand the area Current Work Modes in Calendar, and choose the time period by choosing the number of the calendar week.

  4. The work modes for the chosen week are displayed in a separate area. To display the workload and the work modes for this week, choose the button Analyze the Work Modes.

  5. The report displays the most important workload metrics for the selected system or instance for the selected week; choose which metric you want to display. The work modes that were in effect during the relevant period are also displayed, so that you can determine whether and how the various work modes matched the actual workload. To allow you to obtain a better overview, you can show and hide the individual work modes in the graphic.

You can also adjust the weeks for which the data is displayed. Enter either the calendar day on which the week starts, or go to the next or previous week, with the arrow keys.
