Managing Logical Components

Logical components describe a function, and group the technical systems that provide this function, in different roles. They are used, for example, by business process planners and software administrators, who are typically not concerned with the technical details of the system implementation.

Logical components are sets of technical systems that need to be synchronized during change processes, for example development, test and production system.
The technical systems building the logical component typically use the same installation number and are linked to each other by transport routes.
A logical component is a high level view of an application, to plan and maintain it.
Business processes refer in their descriptions to logical components.
They form the link between the business perspective and technical perspective of a landscape , and connect the technical systems with the planning landscapes.
To plan the system landscape, a logical component can already be defined without a technical system assignment. In this case, you only assign a product instance.

Activities

Migrate logical components (automatic activity)

The migration includes logical components that were previously created or changed by a user in transaction SMSY.

Migration is only relevant if you are upgrading from a previous version of SAP Solution Manager. For a new installation of SAP Solution Manager 7.1 SP09 or higher, migration is not required.

You can execute the automatic activity Migrate Logical Component Data in the SAP Solution Manager Configuration (transaction SOLMAN_SETUP) under System Preparation Prepare Landscape Description Migrate SMSY Data into LMDB Automatic Activities. Choose the Start Transaction link.

Display, create, and edit logical components

Choose SAP Solution Manager: Work Centers Solution Manager Administration Landscape Logical Components .

Or start transaction LMDB directly and choose the Logical Components tab.

Assign a logical component to a technical system

Apart from the logical component editor in the LMDB, you have the following options:

Under SAP Solution Manager Configuration Managed Systems Configuration , you have to assign logical components to the technical systems registered in the LMDB. Select a technical system and choose Configure System. Log messages tell you if information is missing or inconsistent. These checks prepare a technical system so that it can be used for Early Watch Alerts, for example.
You can also start transaction LMDB and choose a technical system from the Technical Systems tab. In the navigation tree, choose Software and Add Logical Component. For more information, see the documentation in the UI.

Check to which logical component a technical system is assigned

Start transaction LMDB and choose a system from the Technical Systems or Product Systems tab. In the navigation tree, navigate to the Software information for a technical system, where you find the assigned logical components.

Other Activities

Once the logical component has been created, you can assign it to projects and solutions. You have two options:

Start transaction LMDB, select a logical component on the Logical Components tab, and choose Edit. On the Overview screen, choose Where Used Launch Work Center .
In the Solution Manager Administration work center, choose Solutions. You can navigate from within a project to the managed systems. For more information, see Assigning Logical Components to the Project.

To monitor systems and business processes, for example, you can assign the logical components to a solution.

Start transaction LMDB, select a logical component on the Logical Components tab, and choose edit. On the Overview screen, choose Where Used Launch Work Center .
