The Monitoring and Alerting Infrastruktur (MAI) contains a comprehensive set of Web Dynpro tools, as well as other Analysis Tools. Some are in the Technical Monitoring or SAP Solution Manager Administration work centers, others are only available in Web Dynpro Toolse. You have access to a wide selection of tools for finding and handling errors, and monitoring MAI performance, without having to switch between work centers.

Activities

Call the Web Dynpro tools in the transaction MAI_TOOLS. In the Web Dynpro Tools group box, choose Open Web Dynpro Tools. The tools are shown in an overview screen, to which you can return after calling a tool, with Back to Overview.

The following tools are available

  • Definition tool

The definition tool creates templates for types of SAP managed objects. These templates contain all metrics, events and alerts. This tool is not for the use of customers

  • Template Management UI (work mode)

For every managed object type, SAP provides templates that contain the definitions or values of metrics, events, and alerts (MEA). The templates delivered by SAP are already realistically configured, but you can also create your own templates, based on them, in the SAP Solution Manager Configuration (transaction SOLMAN_SETUP), in the   Technical Monitoring   System Monitoring   Template Management   step.

Information about using template management is in the help for each step, and under Create Templates.

  • Data Provider Connector

This tool calls Extractor Framework management, the central SAP Solution Manager data collection and distribution infrastructure. In the extractor framework management, you can monitor the status of the extractors, identify the causes of errors, and resolve problems, for example:

    • Data provided by extractors is not available in an application. You identify the cause of, for example, connection errors, and resolve them. You activate or release extractors, and set up inconsistent extractors again.

    • To identify bottlenecks, monitor the performance of the extractors, and their effect on systems, for example the amount of data collected, or the time data collection took.

The normal access to Extractor Framework management is in the SAP Solution Manager Administration work center, under   Infrastructure   Framework   Extractor Framework  . For more information, see Extractor Framework.

  • MAI Runtime Component Analysis

MAI runtime component analysis displays technical monitoring status informationen for a managed object. Choose the managed objects with Select Managed Object, by specifying the technical scenario type, and setting its Snapshot-Relevant flag. You can now get the following information for the selected managed objects:

    • Choose Memory Usage to display the assigned and used shared memory. In the subscreen Memory Usage Details these values are broken down further by Performance, Configuration, Exceptions and Availability. You can also display shared memory use by monitoring scenarios, in the Memory Usage for Monitoring Scenario Type tab.

      Note Note

The shared memory in technical monitoring comprises the status for events and metrics, and the last measured values of the metrics.

      End of the note.
    • Choose Gray Metrics and Events, to display the metrics and events which do not have enough values, so that they are displayed gray. A log entry which can help to find errors, is output in the Message Text column.

    • Choose Download Monitoring Data, to output the most important technical monitoring data in an XML file. You can send information required to find and resolve errors, to SAP support. You can also Upload Monitoring Data, but only do so if advised by SAP Support.

You can also go from this tool to the metric repository (see below) or the Directory Browser. If you click on an entry in the list of selected managed objects, the current technical monitoring status in the various categories, for this object, is displayed.

  • Metric Repository

This tool displays the contents of the metric repository. The metric repository contains the values of the metrics in the Directory Browser. The Event Calculation Engine (ECE) uses these values to determine the monitoring status of the managed objects, and generate events.

You can filter the values of the metric repository to be displayed, by the following criteria:

    • Time period (default: the last 5 minutes). The metric repository only contains the values of the last hour, for performance reasons.

    • Technical scenario and managed object

To display the metric repository according to the above criteria, choose Display Data. The metrics for which there are values in the metric repository according to the filter criteria, are sorted by category, and output with the measured values, their timestamp and a message text.

  • Alert Inbox

This tool displays the alert inbox. Alert Inbox is the central access point for analyzing and solving Technical Monitoring problems in an SAP Solution Manager landscape.

The normal access to the alert inbox is in the Technical Monitoring work center, under Alert Inbox. For more information, see Technical Monitoring Alert Inbox.

  • Monitoring

This tool displays the Technical Monitoring work center. For more information, see Technical Monitoring Work Center.

  • E2E Alerting Log Viewer

This tool displays application log messages (transaction SLG1) for the technical monitoring environment. To show error messages, select the problem.

The normal access to the E2E Alerting Log Viewer is in the SAP Solution Manager Administration work center, under   Infrastructure   Framework   Alerting Framework   Exceptions  .

  • Event Calculation Performance Monitor

This tool displays the most important Event Calculation Engine (ECE) KPIs during a specified time period, to evaluate the performance of ECE.

  • Directory Browser

This tool gives an overview of the managed objects which are monitored in technical monitoring. The managed objects (e.g. the technical system PRD) are displayed, not their types (e.g. technical systems of type AS ABAP with release SAP NetWeaver 7.00 – 7.03), as in the Configuration Explorer.

The directory browser only displays values; you cannot make any changes. The metrics, events, alerts and templates used, are displayed for each managed object:

The Technical Monitoring Directory Browser contains information about the Directory Browser.

  • Directory Configuration Performance Monitor

This tool provides information about the performance of auto-configuration. Auto-configuration is a configuration step, which uses the template information from the alerting repository, for the managed objects. The results of auto-configuration are saved in the alerting directory.

  • Shared Memory Tools

This tool displays the most important data about technical monitoring shared memory usage during a specified time period. The shared memory in technical monitoring comprises the status for events and metrics, and the last measured values of the metrics.

    Note Note

In the Shared Memory Relocation Tool tab, you can move the shared memory to another instance of your SAP Solution Manager systems, for the categories Availability, Configuration, Exceptions and Performance, which can be useful for Event Calculation Engine performance problems. Only use this function if instructed to do so by SAP support.

    End of the note.
